The second ever U.S. Cup was held at Majestix this year and had a solid showing.  Up from 24 players last year, 36 players made the effort and trip to play at the last major event using the old rules, which also happened to be the first ever event for the newly formed ROC Age format.  With the Ban List and a much larger pool of game elements to choose from, the metagame was vibrant and almost no two teams were alike.  All-Star archetypes from formats past mixed in with newer strategies and new “combos” were formed in the process.  It was a fun-filled (and hot!) weekend with some of the top players from the region battling it out to become the 2017 U.S. Cup Champion.  After 6 grueling rounds of Swiss the Top 8 was formed.  Quinjet, Shuma Gorath, Mistress Death, Shriek, Mousers Swarm, Shredders, and two different Nick Fury builds made the final cut.  Talk about variety!  The Finals pitted the inaugural U.S. Cup Champion, Kevin Afrooz, against former Majestix Regional Champion, Aaron Cantu.  It was Red Shredders versus The Book of Death.  Auto-damage versus MASSIVE damage.  The action was fast and fierce as Kevin took the fight to Aaron, KO’ing Splitlip before Aaron could get anymore hammers equipped, but Aaron only needed the 3 hammers to get the job done and take out the Shredders in short order.  The 3rd Place game saw Matt’s nigh-unstoppable Shriek team take out Steven’s Quinjet team pretty quickly, as the Green Power Battery slowed down Steve’s free actions.  With the new Mighty Thor set and the new rules in motion, it will be interesting to see how this format evolves and grows.  Congratulations to Aaron Cantu, the 2017 U.S. Cup Champion!
