Tournament Report – WKO Eternal Games (Warren, MI) – PJ Bolin

Majestix - Clix O The Week 2

by PJ Bolin

Hello there everyone!  This is PJ Bolin, chiming in with a tournament report from the WKO at Eternal Games in Warren, MI.  I won the WKO last round up here, and I had to go defend my title!  There was a total of 39 players, giving out 5 US Nationals spots!

First off, we will start with the build that I decided to use for this event.

Build

Krang 170
Rock of Eternity 22 (Envy, Sloth, Lust, Wrath)
Juston Seyfert 40
Baxter Stockman 30
Harley Quinn 25
Pym Pocket Tank 8
Batman ID Card 5 (TW Batman)

No real need to go over why you play Krang with Juston and Baxter, but I’ll touch base on the less common decisions I made for the build.

Joker’s Wild 002 Harley Quinn

This is the first thing that people noticed to be different on my build in each of my matchups.  She was incredibly crucial to the success of this team against some of the potential matchups.  She enabled two different things to happen, that cannot happen with a traditional double Baxter build.  First, she got Krang up to 7 damage, thus enabling him to deal enough damage in one turn to kill a full dial Quinjet.  7-Damage from the initial attack, 2 from the tank, then Charge and Flurry for 6 each.  Dealing 18-damage in total after reducers.  Second, it enabled Krang to be able to shoot into the opponents starting area.  Perplexing range to 8 was just enough to get a reach to the opposite end, helping swing the mirror match into my favor (which will be discussed later).

Pym Pocket Tank

This was an obvious inclusion into this build and is the only reason that I chose to play this.  Being able to hit entire teams (or at least the biggest threats) for an additional 2-penetrating damage in the alpha strike, is huge.

Rock of Eternity

The build shows four sins, but I only ever intended on utilizing two at a time.  The other 2 were simply there as options if I deemed them necessary (never used them).  The 2 that were always used were Envy and Sloth.  Envy is the first one that shows when you begin to spin the Sin Dial upward, enabling the use of Sidestep + Energy Shield/Deflection.  Once two sins are on, Krang gets Flurry with no action tokens, and Hypersonicspeed while he has 1 token.  Why wouldn’t Krang want these powers?

Now that we have the team, let’s go into how the event went!  As I stated earlier, there were 39 players, so we ran 5 rounds, cut Top 8.  This meant that every 4-1 made Top 8, so I had a goal to strive for.

Swiss Rounds

Round 1 vs Tim Bold

He was playing Jean Grey, 2 Drones, Penguin, Mephisto, Bizarro Green Arrow, and a full Round Table.  He won map roll, and put us in the Turtle Lair.  He takes first turn immunity and passes, so I assign a sin and pass.  He yoyo’s a Drone out to call in Hawkeye, Perplex damage to a 4 and takes a shot at Juston, but I hit the Super Sense roll.  My turn, I go throw the tank at his Bizarro Green Arrow, hitting and placing the tank on top of his entire team, killing both drones and Mephisto.  I spend a couple turns running away from Penguins before I kill Bizarro Green Arrow as last action is called. Win 1-0

Round 2 vs Trevor ???

He was playing Fugitoid, Chase Michaelangelo, Chase Raphael, and Space Michaelangelo with Supreme Intelligence assigned to it.  He won map, and picked the cargo ship.  He moved his whole team up halfway and placed a free Smoke Cloud, with his whole team in Stealth.  I just assign a sin and wait for him to come up.  He bases my team, so I just Flurry and kill Fugitoid and Space Mikey, then use Juston to move my team away from the chases.  I end it in 2 turns from there.  Win 2-0

Round 3 vs Jay Solomon

He played Jakeem w/ Eclipso, Faust w/ Brainiac, and a 2 sin box.  He wins map…because obviously I’m not allowed to, and takes us to Wizkids Fffice.  He rolls dark blue on first turn and locks all speed values at 3, assigns a sin to Faust and Sidesteps up a bit. I just pass because speed 3 is annoying.  He rolls yellow the next turn and hits everyone, killing Harley and my tank, while putting Juston and Baxter to their final clicks.  Krang rolled out of the damage with Impervious.  He assigns a sin to Jakeem and passes.  Knowing that Jakeem won’t be able to return the kill on Krang, I decide to just go ahead and remove Faust from the game.  I Perplex damage up to a 7 and run out to kill him, but I either miss, or he rolled out of it.  I just pick Pulse Wave and finish the job after that.  He hits Krang with Jakeem and puts me toward the end of the dial.  Got a crucial support for 6 from Juston and positioned so he could only hit Krang or Baxter.  So he runs up and kills Baxter to score the points, and then I kill Jakeem. Win 3-0

Round 4 vs Troy Bohling

He played Krang, 2x Baxter, Juston, Rock of Eternity, with an ID.  I won map!  Just when I knew I needed it!  I just pass turn after putting a sin on, and he matches.  So on my turn 2, I run all the way across the map and take a shot at his Krang that was still in the start zone.  He rolled the Impervious and ignored the damage from the attack, but I still got to place the tank separating krang from his support pieces.  I go ahead and poke Krang again and put him to last click.  He calls in Nick, Perplexes damage to 6 and goes for the kill on my Krang, needing a 7.  Rolled a 6 and a 4.  I clean up and end.  Win 4-0

Round 5 vs Brian Poling

Guaranteed to be in Top 8, no matter the result!  Stress was off for this match.  He used Shuma, Bizarro Green Arrow, 15 pt Atom, 3 ids.  I won map again, went to Chemical Plant.  On turn 2, I attempt to run out and throw the tank at BGA, but miss needed a 7 against a Prob, so I just decide to run back to my start zone, knowing he cannot hit me.  2 turns later, I try again, needing 9s this time, I roll a 10 and a 9.  Separating Shuma from BGA, then I shoot Shuma for 5 and end it.  Win 5-0

Top 8

Top 8 consisted of 2 Krangs, 2 Shuma’s, 2 Jakeem, 1 KC Flash, 1 Jean + Drones.  Tent poles galore!! I get to go into top cut as the 1st seed!

Top 8

Top 8 vs Patricia Lam

I was very happy to be playing someone so pleasant to start off the single elimination.  She was playing KC Flash w/ Eclipso, Bizarro Green Arrow, 2 sin Pandora’s Box, and a couple IDs I think.  She wins map roll and selects cargo ship.  Her first turn is assigning a sin to KC flash, and then Sidestepping up, carrying BGA.  I knew that Flash wasn’t so much of a threat if she never got to the Perplex from the box, so I decide to go after her BGA.  I perplex damage to a 5, run out and shoot BGA, tossing the Tank in the process.  Hitting him to his stop click, the tank putting him to his last click.  I then Charge and finish off BGA.  I attempt to finish the game by selecting Psychic Blast and taking a shot at Flash, but she rolled the KC team ability to ignore the damage!  Feels bad…  The rest of the game was pretty much just me Perplexing damage down on Flash, and watching him run around and punch my support.  She ends up scoring Baxter and ending her move next to my Juston.  I call out Batman so that I can get a single target PW for 5 off on him, putting him to his last click.  She picks the special Blades power to try to get some health back by attacking Juston, but she fails to roll the 5 she needed to hit him.  Krang takes Precision Strike and finishes up.

Top 4 vs Adam Kohl

Won me another tank!  Woohoo!  Adam was playing Shuma, BGA, 15 Atom, 2 sin Pandora’s Box, and some IDs.  I was happy to get to play another person who I am familiar with.  Neither of us really cared much beyond the point of breaking into Top 4, so it made for a very friendly game.  I knew exactly what I had to accomplish, considering I had already played this matchup once today.  He won map and put us on the map with all the glass walls.  He assigns a sin turn 1, so I ran across the map and attempted to separate Shuma and end the game, but I miss BGA, needing 6s with a Prob.  So, I decide to run back to my start zone and try again on turn 2.  He moves up half the map, and assigns a sin onto BGA (giving him a 2nd token).  I move back out and hit with my tank throw this time, splitting them up and killing Shuma.  Chatted for a good while as we finished up.

Finals vs Markus Wade

Finals

Another great person to play against!  It was my lucky day!  We decide before the game that we would split the chase/prime set, regardless of whoever won.  I’ve been around Markus a ton of times, and he wanted Jakeem and BGA, offering me the rest.  So, I agree and we just play it out for the title of winner!  He was playing Krang, Juston, Baxter, 18.2 Drone, 2 sin Pandra’s Box, IDs.  He had seen me play throughout the day, and knew that I could out reach him.  He won map roll, assigned a sin and Sidestepped forward.  I run all the way over and kill Juston, dropping the Tank to separate Krang from his Baxter, and don’t get to hit the drone with it, so I jog back to my start zone.  He kills my Tank to gain a 10-point lead.  I run back over again and shoot Baxter this time, followed up by a Hypersonic to kill the Drone.  Game goes on for about 2 more turns as I position to kill Krang., but ultimately Markus decided to control his own fate, and make his Krang go colossal and hit mine, killing itself.

Back to back wins in Michigan!  The definite MVP of this event was the Pym Particle Tank.  It was a piece that everyone knew was going to be a real threat, and it definitely lives up to its hype.  The event was ran great (like always, Eternal Games is one of my favorite venues to play at). Everyone was awesome, and I got to rock a sweet Krang shirt with my kilt.  I hope everyone enjoyed my article, and I hope I wasn’t too long winded.
