The Learning Curve – Building for Bronze Age – Josafa Alves

by Josafa Alves

Hello everyone, it is a great pleasure for me to write my first article ever for Majestix!!   These guys are great and they have accomplished so much for the game and the community.   A little about me before we get into what really matters.   I first started playing clix back in Brazil in the early 2000’s where all the figures looked like horror figures!   I played the game for about 2 years and stopped because it had died in my area.   In 2013 I moved to Florida and picked it up again when War of Light came out.  I did really well in those events winning 3 of them in different stores and that is when I saw the first true spikes in pricing for figures with the entities breaking the $200 mark.   I played the game again for a couple of years but a lot of our player base moved and I had to stop again because I couldn’t justify having over $1k in product that I wasn’t using consistently.   In the end of last year I decided to come back to it again as another game I was playing got canceled (Star Wars Destiny) and I went to Worlds as soon as I got back and had a blast there. (I had a handful of figures as I had just come back to the game and played it unaware of most teams) I almost made cut but some questionable things happened which I won’t be getting into in this article.

Now, let’s get to what matters, team building!  Whenever I am team building, I usually start off with one figure I am trying to build around.  Usually this figure will have unique traits and abilities to warrant me building around it, some examples I have chosen recently are:   Punisher War Machine, Thor chase CAAV, Black Widow Chase, Alyosha Kraven.  Once I have this figure chosen, I will look at figures that synergize with it and I usually follow 3 steps.

  • Supportive Powers.  Probability Control, Leadership, Perplex, Outwit and Telekinesis.  I try to include as much of these as possible.
  • Theme team or not? Can this team afford to lose map and go second?  By not being in a theme team you end up with more powerful figures as your pool choice is greater not having to worry about keywords.  (some figures pretty much demand a theme team, ex:  Black Widow Chase)

ESPIONAGE: PATIENCE…: FREE: If Black Widow is on a themed team or your starting force has two other characters from [Black Widow Movie set symbol], standard friendly characters can’t have their attack rolls of 10 or more rerolled, and opposing characters targeting those characters can’t have their attack rolls of 4 or less rerolled.

  • Resource and Maps. This is probably the most exciting part of Bronze Age as there is so much to choose from.  I love resources that stop your opponent from doing what they want to like Indigo Power Battery, Green Power Battery etc…  When I am choosing maps I usually like to pick either a map that my team is exceptionally good at or a map my opponent will struggle with like trying to shoot or move.  Map is probably the most underrated weapon you have but it can actually make or break.  I learned this from facing Pat.  He crushed me at a big event once with map choice alone.

So, here is a breakdown of my choices from one of the teams I have played recently.  The figure I chose to build around was Alyosha Kraven.  Here is the team

Alyosha Kraven 70 pts
Wendigo 15 pts x3
Groot 20 pts
Dark Phoenix 30 pts
Triple H 85 pts
Duke Thomas 35 pts
Carnage 10 pts
Iron Avengers 5 pts
Troublemakers and Troublalerts on Sideline.

These are the two powers he has that were very relevant to the team:

ANIMAL INFLUENCE: If Alyosha Kraven was given a non-free action this turn, you may give Gulyadkin the Lion or another friendly character with the Animal keyword a move action as a free action.

GULYADKIN: As you place your force on the map, you may place in your starting area a Gulyadkin the Lion bystander token as described on the back of this card. As long as a friendly Alyosha Kraven is on the map, Gulyadkin the Lion can be given one action as a free action.

Immediately I want Animals in the team and the perfect one is Wendigo at 15 pts.   With Alyosha I can get a Wendigo across the map quickly with the free MOVE.  If someone is wounded already after that move they can make an attack right off of a full move.  I would usually Sidestep right after and then Charge Flurry.  That is possibly 5 swings and 5 heals off of one Wendigo which would trigger either a Troublemaker or a Troublalert from Sideline.  Now the big synergy here is Duke Thomas and Triple H.  I have a ton of pog makers in the team which will help boost the attack and damage because of Duke and Triple H.  All my retaliators in this retal with close attack and they all benefit from duke’s bonus. (including Phoenix)

WE ARE ROBIN!: Friendly characters making close attacks modify attack +1 for each other friendly character adjacent to their target.

NUMBERS GAME: Empower. Friendly characters that are adjacent or share a keyword with him besides WWE can use Empower.

Now in this team I don’t have all the supportive powers I mentioned but I am betting on the fact that most of my attacks are 13+ and hitting for 5+ damage.  I based this team off of a team I used to win a Big event in Northern Florida in the end of last year.  I hope this helps some people build their teams in the future and thanks for reading!!
