The Player’s Pulse – Vulture Bad For Modern? – Tylor Spees

by Tylor Spees

Personally I feel Vulture is unhealthy for the meta and I am not a fan of him getting a buff this major in the new Steve Rogers. The stated reason for him not getting changed on the Watchlist was that he currently didn’t fit into a high theme and he needed to equip to be majorly effective. That is no longer the case. I think when Vulture is in the meta he limits the field too much. basically anything that can die in two attacks for 6-damage becomes a liability. He also limits the things WizKids can put out because his mechanic is inherently broken. The Ock Arms are a really fun and neat object that should be in the meta. So is this new Steve Rogers. These are awesome pieces to be able to use. But when coupled with a figure that can attack every character on a force they amplify the problem. The same could be seen with Hawkeye and Proxima Spear. It is also inherently an unfun mechanic, especially to new players. We all know a new player is going to go to a WKO this month and they are going to be one turned by Vulture before they can do anything. They won’t be playing a game of heroclix. They will sit down and watch someone else wipe out piece after piece until they lose while the guy across from them apologizes and has to explain how what he is doing is legal. That shouldn’t happen but we all know it will.

I want to be clear here. I am not saying that Vulture is unbeatable. He isn’t an auto win. There are ways to build a team to have a decent chance against him. That is not my issue. Even if he doesn’t win a single WKO he will still limit what can be played in the meta and he will still cause negative play experiences across the community that may turn new players off.

I am also not disparaging those that choose to play Vulture or those that have won with him in the past. As I have said he is beatable and any win with Vulture is legitimate and shouldn’t be criticized. I am also a big proponent of playing what wins. If WizKids gave us the tools we should use it. Never criticize someone else for how they enjoy playing the game especially in a competitive event.

OK I’ll get off my soapbox now. Whatever you decide to play in the next month good luck to everyone and I hope to see a lot of you across the table in the future!
