Tournament Report – Clixed Off Classic – Patrick Frazer

by Patrick Frazer

Clixed Off Classic 10/16/21 Henderson, Kentucky

Hey guys! Patrick Frazer here to report on last weekend’s Clixed Off Classic in Henderson, KY. This was my first in-person event since 2019 World’s so I was pretty hyped to get some clix in and see some familiar faces with my teammate, Nate White. I decided to play a +11 Monster team since I think going first is huge in the meta right now. I ended up winning map in 7 out of 8 of my games with a +3 to map on 6 of 8 and +2 in the other two games.

This team has 2 Leaderships, 2 TKs, 2 Perplexes, 3 Outwits, 2 Retaliators, a pog generator, terrain manipulation, full map reach and lots of attacks. Here’s the squad…

Team

The Commissioner          25
Sky Tyrant                          50
Scarab                                   50
F4 100 Mole Man             50
Moloid                                  10
Proteus                                10
XDPS G023b Storm          25
Wendigo x 4                       15
Power Gem                        10
Reality Gem                       10

Sideline

Black Vulcan x 3
Samurai
Grodd x 2
Brainiac x 2
Lex Luthor

Maps

Glen Grove Cemetery
Negative Zone Prison
WWE War Games

The plan is simple; load up Sky Tyrant to a 14-Attack with 6-Damage (when carrying Moloid), hit them twice and fly back home.  Scarab can copy the Power Gem and blow up an object on turn one to take an early lead in some matches. Wendigos can make up to five attacks each with Mole Man’s free move trait.

Round 1 – Jay Major

DOOM
Dark Phoenix
2 Flash
Emperor Gladiator
Molecule Man
Remaker Ring
Time Gem

No time to worry about rust, I had to play Jay Major Round 1. He had a +6 Latvaria team swapping to the Doom that limits me to 3 actions. I won map (Glen Grove Cemetery) and equipped my equipment. There were no objects I could blow up so had one Wendigo move out just a bit. Jay brought out Gladiator across the map to shoot the Wendigo and get a Confidence token. I sent Sky Tyrant out after Dark Phoenix since I was pretty worried she’d take out all my Wendigos if I let her. It was back and forth for a minute, but I was able to get Emperor Gladiator with a bunch of Flurry from a Wendigo and Sky Tyrant to get a narrow win.

Round 2 – Tylor Spees

Spider-Hamurai
Grodd x 2
Maggot x 3
Ch’p
Ultra Humanite
High Evolutionary Prime
Emotional Modifier
Waldo Arms

Tylor has been killing with this team and we theorized a strategy in the car on the way to Kentucky. Essentially the only thing you can do is win map then hit his guys first through all the Super Senses and Probs. Just as we drew it up, I won map (Glen Grove Cemetery) equipped my objects and blew up his Emotional Modifier with Scarab. Tylor set up knowing that Sky Tyrant was coming in. He was right and I sent Tyrant and double targeted two Maggots with Tyrant Perplexed up 2 from Scarab and Mole Man and carrying Moloid for the Empower and Prob. Tyrant hit and one of the Maggots hit the Super Senses making my decision pretty easy. Tyrant hit with the second attack, killing another Maggot and flying back to his starting area. Tylor was able to kill a lot more than I expected on the return attack, but on my next turn I Charged a Perplexed Wendigo in and hit on his attacks despite being Probbed 6 times and using up all of his Theme Probs and eventually getting his whole team.

Round 3 – Preston

Emperor Gladiator
Juggernaut
Domino
Multiple Man
Maggot
Daimonic Ring
Emotional Modifier

Preston is actually playing an Illuminati theme swap but this was what was on the map by the time the swaps were done. He had Hood and Black Panther on the starting force so they can drop two gems for his team to use. I won map and switched things up by going to the Negative Zone Prison. He didn’t have any Barrier and thought it would be good to start a little closer. I blew up the Modifier turn one and hunkered down. He sent Gladiator to get a Confidence token. I hit back with Tyrant killing Maggot and Domino. Once I was able to get a Wounded token on the Emperor the Wendigos were able to do their thing and get the whole team.

Round 4 – Alex Cooze

Doom
Molecule Man
Emperor Gladiator
2 Flash
Nathaniel Richards
Power Gem
Reality Gem

I finally lost map and Alex took me to the Latvarian Village. With Doom limiting my actions and the peasants grabbing my objects I was all out of sorts. Despite playing Nathaniel Richards in plenty of online tournaments, I seemingly forgot what he did when Alex gave Emperor Gladiator Energy Explosion along with his extra bolt from the Reality Gem so he could kill all my Wendigos. I was able to get the Power Gem on Tyrant but was never able to equip the Reality Gem. I definitely missed the Perplex, and tried to just keep Gladiator tied up while I took shots at him with Rookie in Stealth. I was able to score a few Shi’ar Guards until Alex stopped making them. The score was closer than the game seemed as I never felt like I had momentum in this one.

Round 5 – Sam Powell

Batman
Doom
2 Flash
Molecule Man
Sky Tyrant
Amanda Waller
Waldo Arms
Alchemical Fire

Final Round before cut, I’m looking pretty good to make the cut since I have lots of points so I know I don’t want to lose without scoring anything. I win map, go the Cemetery and blow up the Alchemical Fire. Sam sets up well with Barrier and equips the Waldo Arms to her Sky Tyrant. I try to conga line my Wendigos so she can only Mind Control one Wendigo and Proteus. She hits the Mind Control and rolls a crit miss killing my Wendigo and not even healing another one! Worst case scenario. I’m able to get in there with Tyrant and Storm and kill Doom and Batman. She has a chance to kill my Sky Tyrant with her Flash. She hits with the first attack declares the second attack and last action is called. If she hits, she wins the game by 20 points. She does hit and immediately goes to the top of my revenge list! I finish with the most points of the 2 loss crew so I limp into the cut at 3-2.

Top 8

All my matches in the cut were rematches, starting with Tylor Spees and the Spider-Hamimals. I do my best to roll well for map succeed again. I start the exact same way as game 1 but this time Tylor decides to send everyone in up top and try and score some points early. He is able to Poison my Commissioner to death and take the early 25-10 lead. The Wendigos and everyone else were able to hit back hard and we both decided that his game 1 strategy was probably the better play.

Top 4

I have Jay Major again. I win map again. He hits one of my Wendigos again. I’m able to retaliate on Emperor with Storm and the Precision Strike makes the Wounded token stick. Then I Mind control Gladiator to shoot Dark Phoenix. My dice were feeling hot and with the amount of attacks this team can make it was able to get the job done before time expired.

Finals

Now I have Alex again, and this time I won map. We go to the Cemetery and I equip up. Alex does the same. I think I’m slick so I Outwit TK from Flash and move my pieces a bit closer so Sky Tyrant can get into the fight easier, but I once again forget about Nathaniel Richards, who gives himself TK and launches Emperor out to kill my Sky Tyrants. This was clearly not how I wanted things to go, but it did leave Gladiator close enough to my Wendigos. I was able to get a Wounded token on Gladiator with Storms retaliation and Mind Controlled him to be even closer to the Wendigos. Wendigos can just make so many attacks so they were able to eventually wear Gladiator down. His Doom was able to take some Wendigos out but Rookie was able to get Doom and I held on to the lead.

It was an incredibly smooth-running tournament, and it was great playing in person again. Dan Powell was able to find a nice, large venue and bring in Chad Birdsall to judge. We were well taken care of and it was absolutely worth making the trip down to Kentucky to play with our toys. Where’s the next tournament going to be?
