Hidden Gems: Man of Steel set (Bronze Age) – Tom Shanabarger

by Tom Shanabarger

The Man of Steel Movie set came out during a time when the competitive scene was full of Team Bases and Ghost Riders with the Bat Belt.  In that particular environment this set never really got the opportunity to shine.  That said the set actually has some pretty solid figures in it. So let’s dive in.

  • 001 Superman – This guy is a reasonable call in option.  He has 2 dials the 200 point one packs running shot and Psychic Blast.  The 100 point dial gives you running shot Energy Explosion or you can use Ranged Combat Expert.  Either way with 8-Range and 2-targets backed up by Superman Ally Team ability he’s not a bad option.

  • 002 Kryptonian Scientist – This guy is a scientist keyword figure that has top dial Enhancement and Barrier.  At 36 he is 2 points more than the Hulk set A.I.M. Renegade who I would consider generally superior due to access to Hydra Team Ability.  That said the one big advantage he does have over the Renegade is he can use Willpower when a friendly character with the Kryptonian keyword is within 8 squares.  With Mister Oz in the game that is very viable.

  • 005 Jor-El – At 75 points he is a tad costly but he can use Outwit and if he does it as a POWER he can Outwit a team ability which is nice. Also He packs the PD Team Ability and Energy Explosion. Both of which are a welcome additions on Scientist teams.

  • 007 Lois Lane – While in recent years you can get a lot more generally for 39 points she is a simple Outwit character.  The upside is her Outwit comes in the form of a special power that lets her use Improved Targeting: Ignores Characters while she uses it.  With access to a Sniper Rifle and some low point ID call ins she could be worth it on the right build.

  • 011 Jax-Ur – This guy is the MUST HAVE figure in the set in my book.  He packs Perplex and a special power that reads as follows:  POWER, chose an adjacent friendly character, and roll a d6. On a result of 1-4, damage dealt by the chosen character can’t be reduced below 1 this turn; 0n a result of 5-6, damage dealt by that character is penetrating damage this turn. That ability is awesome.  He also has the Superman Enemy Team Ability and the Scientist keyword.

  • 013 Colonel Hardy – This guy is a very close second for me in this set and absolutely worth owning.  He has leadership and the PD Team ability and a special power that reads as follows: Friendly characters with a lower point value and the Soldier keyword within 8 squares can use Willpower. POWER: Adjacent characters named Superman can use Willpower this turn. That is a ton of value out of a 60 point figure.

Well That’s it for this Set. I will give honorable mention to the Zod Chase in the set as he is a fun classic beat stick but sadly he just isn’t competitive by current standards.  Next up Wolverine and the X-Men!
