Monthly Review – Majestix Open Series $1k Trials – Jeff Bullard

by Jeff Bullard

Welcome to the Monthly Review for 300pts Bronze Age.  Just a little about the format before we get started:

Superman set and up, any set with an “oreo” base is legal except Star Trek ships. There are a few game elements and figures that are banned in the format for various reason. Spells/Traps along with Horde Tokens are NOT legal. The Ban List consists of:

(you can find all the info on this format here)

*Orange Power Battery
*Team Bases
*Felix Faust
*Copycat
*Resurrection Man
*Juston Seyfert
*Morphing Jar
*The Book of the Skull Resource Dial
*Black Swan
*Omega Drive
*Legion XDPS 036b

We follow Modern rules using Wizkids and Majestix maps only. Also, ATAs are legal in this format. With this all in mind, here are some of the teams from October 2019 that made an impression on me:

Venue: Majestix Games (Santa Ana, CA)

(Celebrity Theme +2)
226 Lex Luthor (uc)+ Parallax + Justice League ATA

3 Protester
3 Trucker

2 Bat Signal
20 Pandora’s Box:

Maps: Amok Time, Metal Arena, Underground Caverns

Let’s start off with the reigning champ and his team.  There isn’t much I can say that has not already been said.  However, with the release of X-Men the Animated Series: The Dark Phoenix Saga, Richard made an addition to this team that makes it much more of a threat.  It is the Magneto G015, calling him in at his 200pt line is insane.  His ability to Running Shot for 5 squares and Pulse Wave with a 4 square radius while targeting through blocking and destroying it after resolutions makes it impossible for most teams to hide. Also, if he destroys more than 2 pieces of blocking terrain, he can generate a standard object and TK as FREE only to range attack. On top of all of that, he can colossal retaliate.  With a potential 11-damage to deal out, adding both Magneto ID cards is a great addition to the team.

Venue: Clix Collective (Newark, CA)
Date: 10/19/19
# of Players: 13

1st Place – Wes Betschart (Jakeem JSA)

(JSA Theme +4)
143 Jakeem Thunder + Assigned Fragment
48 Dr. Mid-Nite + Assigned Fragment
45 Red Tornado (HQGG)
20 Billy Batson
33 The Phoenix Force:
-All 5 Fragments
15 ID Cards:
-Batman
-Green Arrow
-Wonder Woman
Sideline: JLTW051 Batman, WKD17 Batman, EW049 Green Arrow, BVS003 Wonder Woman
Troubalerts: The Flash, Robin, Wonder Woman, Superman
Maps: Gotham City Waterfront, Jean Grey School Higher Learning Grounds

Wes did such an amazing job at positioning and picking powers all day long. His use of “COME AN GET IT!!!: Support. DOUBLE POWER: Place any number of other friendly characters within 4 squares adjacent to Red Tornado and then heal each placed character with the Justice Society keyword 1 click.” It gave him full board reach and the ability to get Jakeem around those tricky corners. He also had two Perplexers on the team to boost Jakeem’s stats up, along with the Phoenix Force. He chose to put the Phoenix Force on the Running Shot, Energy Explosion, Defend & +1 Damage starting line.  Between the synergy, mobility and Jakeem’s ability to adapt to his foes, this team is a force to be reckoned with. Jakeem shall remain supreme!

Venue: Comic Cult (Torrance, CA)
Date: 10/20/19
# of Players: 9

1st Place – Robert Gallagher (Green Constructs)

(Robot Theme +5)
79 Magneto (construct) + Ophidian + Brotherhood of Mutants ATA
50 ISAAC (WKMP)
49 Sabretooth (construct) + Brotherhood of Mutants ATA
40 Mister Sinister (construct)
30 Tri-Sentinel
5 Stark Tower Location Bonus
38 Green Power Battery:
-Ring, Sniper, Bulldozer, Stop Sign, Decoy, Mallet
Maps: Stark Tower, Underground Caverns, Greenhouse

If there was counter to the current competitive scene in the Bronze Age Format, it would be the Green Power Battery.  The “EMOTIONAL SPECTRUM: WILL: If the Power Battery, attached Power Ring, and Constructs are all the same color, each opposing character may be given no more than 1 free action per turn.” The reason I say that it counters the current competitive environment is because most of the top teams revolve around characters doing multiple FREE actions. You are left with the options to Outwit, Perplex or maybe that white box power is a FREE. You then must choose which is more important. Now that he has your team restricted on what it can do, you have these hard to kill constructs that only take 1 click of damage from attacks.  With their high stats top dial, they are very intimidating foes.

Venue: Sci-Fi Factory (Lake Worth, Tx)
Date: 10/26/19
# of Players: 8

1st Place – Dustin Seeders (Mojo)

175 Mojo
25 The Penguin (JWFF)
25 Power Woman (DP18)
15 Dr. Leslie Thompkins
5 Tribbles
2 Bat Signal
28 Power Plant (9 Rings):
-Vortex Beam
-Black Light Ring
-Mento-Intensifier
-Matter Rearranger
-Impact Beam
-Disintegration Beam
-Electro Blast Ring
-Flame Blast Ring
-Ice Blast Ring
25 ID Cards:
-SHIELD Level 7
-Green Arrow
-Storm (Wanted)
-Storm (Faculty)
-Superman
Sideline: EW049 Green Arrow, MP19 Storm, MP19 Storm, XDPSG023b Storm, Boxing Superman, NF056 Nick Fury, ADW067 Hawkeye, JLTW208 Green Arrow
Troubalert: Firestorm
Maps: Bifrost, Underground Caverns, Metal Arena

Mojo Yo-Yo is the game.  This team has a lot of moving parts to make it function correctly.  So, I really like how each “unit” has its job.  You have the Tribbles and penguin racking up the bored tokens, Power Woman and Bat Signal to call back Mojo and of course the main entertainment, Mojo himself. The “MORE ACTION!…RATINGS ARE DROPPING!: Whenever a character misses all targets of their attack, give Mojo a Bored token. // FREE: Remove 2 Bored tokens to either place Mojo anywhere on the map -or- make an attack.” trait is the first Yo. Once in position he can either attack himself or call-in anyone that has 175pts or less. Once he or his call-in have done their work it’s time to come back home via the Bat-Signal and you have your second YO.  The abundance of call-in characters that he can use are endless.  The versatility of the call-ins combined with the adaptability of the Power Plant are what make this such a strong team.

Venue: Amazing Discoveries (Phoenix, Arizona)
Date: 10/19/19
# of Players: 23

1st Place – Patrick Yapjoco

(Monster Theme +5)

100 Slate + Proselyte
79 Lydea Mallor
50 Raven (Rebirth)
20 Groot
20 Proteus
3 Beast ID (Student)
-WCR005 Beast
26 Indigo Power Battery:
-Ring
-Bulldozer
-Sniper Rifle
-Wall
Map: Sporting Arena

Well he did it, he won with Lydea Mallor.  She has been the “counter” in Bronze Age from the beginning. Only problem was that she had not won any events. She has an amazing trait “THE GROWING DARKNESS: At the beginning of the game for all friendly characters with this trait, you may remove one attached game element from an opponent’s resource and, if it is a relic, assign it to a character with this trait…” With such a great ability to take part of a resource at the beginning of game, she cripples most of the teams. This trait, paired with Slates’ full board reach to Pulse Wave, rolls through most teams.  You  will not be able to attack this team unless you get within 4 squares because of the Indigo Battery’s “EMOTIONAL SPECTRUM: COMPASSION: If the Power Battery, attached Power Ring, and Constructs are all the same color, opposing characters that aren’t within 4 squares of a friendly Corps Members or adjacent to the Power Battery can’t draw lines of fire to friendly Corps Members.” Slate’s’ Barrier and Proteus’s “Warping Reality: Barrier, Shape Change, Smoke Cloud. Once per turn, Proteus can use Barrier as FREE or Smoke Cloud as FREE, but only to generate 2 markers. // Other characters within 3 squares can’t use Improved abilities.” Its most likely your opponent will not be able to reach you before they are on their KO click.

It has been an eye opening month for 300pts Bronze Age.  The unique teams winning each event was outstanding.  You never can know what you are going to see sitting across the table in Bronze Age.  The format has just begun and is growing fast.  I look forward to seeing next month’s teams leading up to the Majestix Open Series $1K  @ Majestix on December 7th, 2019. Don’t forget to practice rolling your dice.
