Easton Brock (1)

By Easton Brock

Hey guys, Easton Brock here. I’m here to talk about my team for the first Super Qualifier in Greensboro, North Carolina. This will be the first tournament that the ROC limited format will be applied, so I’m expecting to see a pretty wide field of figures out there, but a few key pieces that will make a good showing.

Format

So before we get to my team I want to go over the format and make a few predictions on what will show up. The ROC limited format is as follows: No resources, no figures larger than a peanut base, no possession, no constructs, no ID cards, no relics (Everything else is still legal including Theme Team, ATA’s, Word Bubbles, & Bystanders). I really love this format because it can really open up team building and let us see some very interesting teams. The two big things that stick out to me are the allowing of theme teams and bystanders. There are a few themes that will be really strong in this format such as Spy, Soldier, SHIELD, Mystical, Avengers, Kryptonian, and Justice League. On the other point, I see a lot of figures that produce bystanders being a big influence on this format, such as Fantomex, Dr. Demonicus, Rick Jones, Clark Kent, even Master Pandemonium.

My Team

So now that we know the format and some things I expect to see, let’s get on to what I came up with for this tournament:

Midnighter                                          100

FF Captain America                            50

Captain America’s Motorcycle            30

Rocket Raccoon                                  80

Ultron (Phalanx Drone)                      30

Left Leg (Hulkbuster Piece)               10

=300

Team Construction

This team is obviously soldier themed, so I will get +5 to map roll. This team is designed to get across the map pretty quick, so I’ll break down how I built it for you guys. First off, I wanted to make good use of the FF Captain America by using him with his Motorcycle, which doesn’t count against my theme as long as I have Cap. So once I decided to go with those two, I looked for a really good close combat piece that could pop out of the cycle and do some serious damage. This is where I turned to Midnighter. He has top dial flurry, outwit, exploit, charge, and possible plasticity. You combine all that with an 11-attack and 3-damage, on top of his trait that cuts through defense modifiers while bringing it down by -1? He belonged on this build for sure. This put me at 180 points, which still gave me a lot of options to choose from. I decided to go with Rocket Raccoon for a few reasons. He is a very solid attacker by himself, boasting another 11 attack 3 damage with energy explosion and two bolts. Another thing this team was lacking was prob, so his ability to re-roll any roll really helps this team (No PC, no team). On top of that he is also a tiny, so the cycle can carry him around to get him in position for pot shots and to use his re-roll ability. This put me at 260 and led me straight to an Ultron Phalanx Drone. At 30 points, you get IT: elevated as well as 2nd click Pulse Wave and Enhancement. The enhancement can really help rocket as it will bump him up to 4-damage. Plus the IT: elevated will come into play as Rocket and the Cycle also ignore elevated in some way. Those three combined will make for some sweet map abuse. This left me with 10 points left, and as we saw earlier, relics aren’t legal but special objects are very much legal. I went with the Left Leg of the Hulkbuster as it can give Rocket toughness and let’s his attacks generate knockback, which could make for some sweet energy explosions! This put me at 300 on the dot with a very satisfying and fun team to play.

Strategy

So obviously I have decided to go with the soldier theme. I think that it gives a lot of options as far as which way you want to go. For this team, the basic strategy is to win map with my +5 to map roll. After that I will put someone on a map that has some elevation that I can abuse. Both Rocket Raccoon and Cap cycle ignore elevation in some way, and Cap cycle drops opposing defenses by -1 if he ends by them after he has crossed elevated terrain.

So at the start of the game, I will immediately pop Midnighter into the Cap cycle and carry Rocket to the Left Leg so he can pick it up next turn. I’ll place it as far as I can and still pick it up on turn two. This puts me in striking position most of the time. Next turn, I can power action Captain America to move the Cap cycle up to half its movement (6 squares). After that I power action the cycle to pop Midnighter out adjacent to the enemy team. Then he can outwit and flurry with -2 to peoples defenses for free hits.

Conclusion

Overall I am very happy with this team and I believe it will be a combination of very fun and very competitive. I have 4 characters that can potentially do damage, and an initial alpha strike that can absolutely cripple teams. A big thanks to Team Stratagem for helping me with some team construction, I hope you all enjoyed the read and happy clixing to all of you!
