The Player’s Pulse – How Much We Forget – Travis Roberts

by Travis Roberts

Welcome back to the Players Pulse! As always I am Ares Edge, and we are talking about those moments that make our hearts sink. The moment you get to an event and realize how much you’ve forgotten at the house. This has to be one of the worst feelings playing this game. Getting to an event and not being prepared. This is the Worlds Edition so if you’re reading this and you’re going to Graceland….STOP READING! Double check you have everything! Get it all packed and stacked and ready to go!

Did you get it done? GOOD! Welcome back! As always I took the the people and asked them what they forget the most and I was surprised by some of the additions that were added to the ideas I had!

The number one answer that was added by Drew Warren was….My luck!? Yup people voted the most that they leave their luck at the house. Now many will say you have to play the percentages in this game and you can “create your own luck” and they wouldn’t be wrong. But there is still a limit to how much you can bend the numbers in your favor. We still roll dice in this game, and if they decide they don’t want to roll for you, it can create a very long day. When in doubt…Perplex the attack!

I have to admit when I asked this question I was thinking very one dimensional. I was thinking all about the physical items you could forget. Lew Headley added the number two vote for this question, “We forget everything we practiced leading up to the event.” How right is this! How many of us are guilty of practicing and when you get on the map you completely forget about all of the things that worked well for us in the practice and we just run out team out their like plastic chickens with their heads cut off! I’m too guilty of this, and sometimes it works and sometimes I’m two rounds in and shaking my head wondering how the hell I ended up all over the map.

The next one I have done many times, it’s one of my additions to the question and many did agree. This is the reason why I pack extra maps for all of my events, because getting all the way to the event to not have my specific maps is heartbreaking. This game has gone through so many phases and we have officially reached the “theme team for my map” phase. Theme teams have become prominent in competitive play, because maps have evolved into major players in the game. There were always maps that played better for our teams but now with Location Bonuses, Special Terrain, and Improved Movement/Targeting there are teams that rely on making sure they get there map. Just look at some of these +7 Avengers and Cosmic teams. We know generic teams aren’t getting the theme Probs, so there is only a few reasons they want their map! To benefit their game or to really throw you off of yours!

I can not stress this enough! Sit down with a build sheet and lay it all out in front of you. Write it all out ahead of time, figures, objects, maps, sideline, game elements! Fill your build sheet out now, then review the numbers and take the figures one by one and pack them away and get them ready. Don’t wait to the last minute to throw it all together and then get to the middle of the country to realize you left key game elements behind at the house.

This is our time to shine Heroclix players, content creators, and just overall lovers of the game! We’ve always wanted an “exclusive” style event just for us and we got it! No convention to navigate through! No hordes and hordes of people to fight through to get to the clix booth or the lines for battle royals. Let’s show Graceland what we have to offer as a community and make them want us to make Memphis the home for Heroclix! I have the privilege to have an amazing fiancé that loves that I have a hobby like this that I am so passionate about. Luckily we were able to get me to a second Heroclix Worlds and hopefully I bring a title to New England this year. If you’re at Worlds and see me come say hi and let’s have some fun! As always Insiders have fun on the map and may all of your rolls be Crits!
