The Player’s Pulse – Spider-Man 1776 Too Good? – Josafa Alves

by Josafa Alves

Hello my fellow Majestix readers!!  Today I will be talking about 1776, its impact on the meta and how to possibly deal with one of the most annoying figures to have come out in a long time.

1776 comes at a very low cost, 75 pts or only 50 pts on its lower dial, but with great impact in the game as reducing your opponent’s actions severely minimizes the output damage they can deal in a single turn.  Perplex, Senses and a STOP click to top it off with a Wildcard TA.  Turning off opposing Leadership and Autonomous just pushes it over the top. I mean it is really a full package that is pretty hard to deal with.   As if all of that wasn’t enough they still have team building capabilities bringing Soldiers into Spider family (wow!).

Since its release it has instantly impacted both Modern and Bronze Ages as we were able to see at the Majestix Qualifier and some ROC WAMs.  Here are a few lists you can expect to face using them in Modern Age:

Spider-Man 1776 50
Spider-Man 1776 50
Spider Pharoah 60
Mary Jane Watson 25
Punisher War Machine 90
Magneto 25
Carnage Symbiote 10
(She-Venom IronMan Marvella Brainiac x2 Gorilla Grodd x2 Black Vulcan x2 – sideline)

Spider-Man 1776 50
Spider-Man 1776 50
Captain Marvel 95
Steampunk Peni 45
Tri-Sentinel 30
Superman 10
Mary Jane 15
Spin Ring 5
(3x Brainiac, 3x Black Vulcan, 2x Grodd, 1 She-venom – Sideline)

So while you are team building for competitive play you have to take in account the possibility of facing one or 2 of these nasty little buggers!!   What to do in that case?   Here are a few things to look for that can help you overcome these adverse situations:

  • So overall since your actions are restricted killing one of them with a single activation could be the way to go as that would instantly put your action count up by one. So effects that do damage after actions resolve can get around those nasty stop clicks.  EX:   Cyclops Sentinel, figures with Maximum Carnage trait such as Absolute Carnage, Venom and Shriek, a few characters from JLU such as robot Superman at 10 pts.
  • Autonomous characters to get around action loss.
  • Free damage combos with Valeria and Venom Groot.
  • Running 1 or 2 1776 of your own. From my experience if you have an alpha strike team that can get multiple characters across the board 1 1776 has the same effect of 2 of them as opposing Leadership and autonomous would be turned off.
  • Characters that can do multiple things within one action EX: Jason Wyngard’s MC chain, Doppelganger Prime (has maximum carnage trait as well) Mary Jane are all characters that let you do a lot with one simple activation.

So if you ask me do I need to run them for my team to be competitive?  Possibly not, however you must have a plan on how to address your opponent using one or more of them.   Do I think this is something healthy for the game?  No, I don’t think it is healthy for the game to effectively change something so basic as actions.   It makes it for a not so fun experience specially if you are new to the game.  If I had to compare this to another famous game like MTG, I would compare his effect to Land Destruction (ie, Wasteland, Strip Mine, Sinkhole), it doesn’t win the game on it’s own but the experience is not fun at all as you usually die with all your bombs in your hand.

What do you guys think, is 1776 going to get hit in the future?   Does it even deserve to be in a possible watch list?   I would love to know your opinions.  Thank you for reading and I will see you guys next time!!
