Chris Stockhaus shows there is still innovation in his win at the Michigan ROC Regional!

Top 16 Single-Elimination Bracket

The second ROC Regional had a great showing, with 58 players battling through the snow.  There is plenty of innovation in this format still, and players are starting to really delve into the format.  KC Shazam! showed up in force, somewhat supplanting Mary Marvel as the per-eminent beat-stick of the format.  Klarion is really proving to be the utility piece of the format as well as Ant-Man. Of course, Nick Fury and a couple of Super Skrull showed up, too, and the disruption figures in Mr. Mxy and Copycat were also well-represented.  The Top 4 teams were all pretty new innovations, with Chris Stockhaus going with an Iron Monger 2.0 with Ant-Mans and Dr. Demonicus to clog the board and disrupt the opposition.  He defeated Scott Johnson, who ran a KC Shazam! and Arcade team. A returning former World Champion, George Massu had probably the most unique team.  His Metropolis team had figures that not many people had on the radar, capped off by a 6-token’d Bizarro (yes, Bizarro can be played at higher than 25pts!).  Lastly, Denton Bobeldyk ran an interesting Lex and Joker Scientist Theme to a Top 4 finish.  Michigan showed the team-building prowess at this Regional.

Analysis:

Besides the usual suspects of the format, we see that 3 of the top 4 teams ran Themed Teams, while the fourth team, ran Arcade (which negates map roll bonuses).  It looks like map choice can be a deciding factor as the Ant-Mans need their map to be effective.  More World’s Finest pieces are breaking onto the scene with Lex/Joker duo making it into the Top 4, as well as Doc Magnus and an increase in KC Shazam! play.  George’s unconventional team clearly shows that you can win with almost anything, as pieces like 6-token’d Bizarro, President Luthor, Lex Luthor (BvS movie set), and Thorn were not previously on the radar of the metagame.  It will be interesting to see what other innovations will come up at the Majestix Regional.
