We have the first ever back-to-back ROC Cup Champion, and his name is Daniel Powell! A change in venue and ownership did not dissuade the players as a solid 66 players entered the Finals event on Sunday. 4 Rounds of Swiss was followed by a Single-Elimination Top 32. It was a diverse, and somewhat expected, metagame. Many of the games’ top teams showed up in force, such as Clixed Off, Clix-Men, Ragnarok, 4 Points Gaming, CWO, Juggernaut, and Stratagem all came with their best. The Thailand and Puerto Rico Cup Champions were also in attendance. It was a tough field and Dan had to navigate through it all with the vaunted Starro in tow. In the end, he outlasted Canada Cup Champion Tom Kerr, in a riveting Finals, to become the 2018 ROC World Cup Champion!
Analysis:
Champion – Daniel Powell
This is the last event before Secret Wars: Battleworld is in rotation, so we got to see what the final metagame looked like. It was a diverse field (a lot different that last year’s event!), and saw the follwing archetypes: Cosmic (either Starro or Uni-Mind), Monster (Goblin King or Retaliator variants), Avengers (Hawkeye teams), Shredder variants, or Gotham City (Green Arrow/Penguins), Sam Cap variants. What was surprising (and a bit expected) was there weren’t that many X-Men teams. The previous king of the format has been eschewed for Goblin King to help fight the Starro menace that has been growing. The breakdown of the Top 16 archetypes is as follows: 4 Starro, 3 Uni-Mind, 3 Sam Cap, 3 Shredder, 2 Green Arrow, 1 Avengers Hawkeye. As you can see, Cosmic still reigns supreme, but it’s nice to see the archers making their impact as well. With WKO and Worlds around the corner, let’s see what Secret Wars: Battleworld brings!
