The sixth stop on the Majestix Open Series event brought us to La Mesa, California (San Diego county). After a short hiatus, the Open Series kicked back into high gear, with the remaining 5 events playing out in 6 weeks, starting with this one. A solid 16 players made it to sunny San Diego, and with them some cool new teams. The staple circuit players were in attendance, mixed in with some locals. In the end, it was Emilio Gutierrez (and newly minted Apex Insider writer!) who pulled off the win with a dominating performance with his patented Mystique Boutique team. Congrats, Emilio!
Analysis:
1st Place – Emilio Gutierrez
The format is still being explored and formed, and this event saw even more innovation. Aside from the usual Mystique and Quinjet teams, we see a couple of new team in the top 4. The newly released TMNT Unplugged set makes a big impact as the Fast Forces turtles cut through the field with their hard-to-kill archetype, only losing to the Mystiques. There is a new tentpole in the form of BIG Groot at 250pts. Brandon’s innovation saw the trees toting Star Sapphire constructs/rings en route to his showdown against the aforementioned Mystiques. There was even a good ‘ol fashioned Nick Fury/SHIELD team that just missed the cut, as well as a Quicksilver/X-Men team. Despite the wide array of teams one can play, if you don’t prepare for Mystiques, that is basically an auto-loss. It will be interesting how the format further evolves when the Open Series hits Northern California this upcoming weekend!
