The first ever WK-only World Championship event was a major success. Hundreds of players descended on Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee. Many of the game’s top player were in attendance, and the Top 8 was a who’s who of Heroclix. 115 players battled through 5 Rounds of Swiss, with a cut to a Top 32 after the short break. Sunday boasted a star-studded Top 8, with 3 U.S. National Champions, 2 ROC World Cup Champions, and 2 World Champions! In the end, it was the young phenom, Isaac Arnold-Berkovits, the 2018 U.S. National Champion mind you, who took down Robert Williams in the Finals to cement himself as the youngest World Champion ever (by a mile!), and one of the greatest players to ever play the game, and he’s only 14 years old! Congrats, Isaac!
Analysis:
2019 World Champion – Isaac Arnold-Berkovits
The metagame was as expected. Plenty of Cosmic to go around, with a splash of Monsters and Mysticals. The Top 4 teams were all Cosmic, with 5 out of 8 being Cosmic. With the newly “discovered” ruling on Q/Trelane on their dice manipulation, we were expecting to see an uptick in play, and as you can see in the Top 4, we had two Q primes and one Trelane. Gardener/Trader and friends are basically the format, with the duo taking 3 out of the top 4 spots. There are still plenty of retaliation going around, which makes Unseen a great figure for the format. X-Men: Animated Series is around the corner and we expect to see a major shake up in the metagame, with perhaps the return of X-Men to the forefront.
