We had our first “big event” since in over a year-and-a-half and it was a success! 19 players came from all over California to play in the Master Mold Grand Event which featured many great prizes alongside the much-coveted Master Mold. The format was Bronze Age Limited and it was going to be an interesting metagame since no real big event has been played in a long time, and with many new sets, who knows what kind of shenanigans players would come up with? In the end, Clix Collective’s own Jeff Bullard (who traveled from the farthest!) took home the big robot, beating Alyssa McNeil in the Finals with Alyosha Animals and capping off a perfect 6-0 record for the day!
Analysis:
With the format essentially being new and uncharted at this point, it was somewhat expected to see many archetypes from Modern Age adapted to Bronze Age, since it was tried and true in that format. Alpha Strike teams were the top two teams in the Finals, while Latveria variants and Cosmic variants and Spider-Family variants were seen throughout the day. Fantastic Four and X-Men teams brought over from Modern Age were also around. Some of the older archetypes in Bronze Age like the Defense Shell, pogs, and retaliation teams were also effective. As you can see in the Top 8 below, the metagame was quite diverse; 2 Alpha Strike teams, Latveria, Avengers, Cosmic, Fantastic Four, Monsters, and Spider-Family. Even though some teams functioned similarly, no two teams were really alike in the Top 8. As of now, the metagame is similar to Modern Age, with more power injected into each archetype (due to the wider range of figures). This bodes well for the metagame in Bronze Age Limited, and it is an easy jumping-on point for newer players who only play Modern Age as the figure pool is not only much wider, but also no Resources and ID cards to complicate things.
