Our second big event attracted a solid 24 players, which was more than the last one. Of course, the prizing was amped up, and X-Men: Rise and Fall was legal for this event as well. We had players come from all over Southern California, and even players from Northern California and Arizona made the trip for some high-level competition. Many great teams, many of the region’s best players competed, but it was Jose Barragan, who basically played a Modern Age team with a couple of Bronze Age additions: Gamma Bomb and Thug(!). That was enough to maintain his 6 characters for the trait to be active and for his Scarabs to run rampant all over the competition on his way to the victory!
Analysis:
What can else can be said other than the format is as healthy as ever. So many archetypes, different strategies were implemented, from Retal teams, to Alpha Strike/Air Drop teams, to turtle teams, to tent-pole teams, (and there was even a Shredder sighting!), you can really just pay what you like. There seems to be a a tug-of-war going on right now in the format with turtle and Alpha Strike teams, with turtle teams starting to pop up more and more, with measures taken against Alpha Strike teams. For the second straight event, Alyosha Animals was in the Finals, with Austin Murray getting second place with it. It’s a legit threat as the best team in the format for sure. It will be interesting to see how the format shakes up with the re-introduction of entities into the format (yes, you read that right, entities are off the Ban List!).
