For the third year in a row, Canadian Nationals has been won by an American, and for the second year in a row, a member of Team Pusheen. Kenji Kanshiro pilots his unique Metallo/Juston Seyfert team to a Championship, beating fellow teammate Tedd Jasiczek (who was also playing a unique team in Guy Gardner) in the Finals. In total, three Team Pusheen members made the Top 8, including defending Canadian National Champion, Kennie Pena. Perennial favorite Patricia Lam also made it to the Top 8, as well as Married With Clix co-founder and host, Jason Collins. They were the last two Canadians standing as each were knocked out by Team Pusheen. Congratulations to Kenji, who locks up a spot at Worlds!
Analysis:
This is one of the last events where we have a massive Modern Age, and the diversity of the metagame is still being shown. We have 8 different builds in the Top 8, each utilizing a different tentpole of strategy. The Power Batteries are still the go-to resource, but Patricia Lam’s Phoenix Force team shows that it’s not just the Power Batteries that are viable. We also get to see the first use of Proteus as an entity as well as Metallo and Guy Gardner seeing some play (both made the Finals!). With a couple of ROC events left, we should see more innovation in this vast landscape.
