Last ROC Super Qualifier of the Season and the first ever Pentathlon a huge success!

This tournament was kind of a last minute event, and we decided it would be better if it was the “last” tournament before the ROC Cup.  Despite being a week after the Salt Lake City Regional and two weeks before the ROC Cup, we still had 39 players for the Main Event, with a total of 44 unique players between the two days.  Plenty of out-of-state players didn’t make the trip, but we still had representatives from Northern Cal, Central California, Inland Empire, and LA County.  We were also graced with the presence of the current World Champion, Paris Gordon, all the way from Houston, Texas.

The competition was fierce, with plenty of high-level teams and play, and the metagame was expected to be Agents of SHIELD flavored, with Quinjets, Nick Furys, and Nighthawk Primes running amok.  Most of the field used a Power Battery, so there were also some Lydea Mallor/Arcade teams to try and counter the strategy.  Red Battery/Poison teams also made an impact.  In the end, however, it was a returning piece to the metagame, and a brand new, left-field team that met in the Finals.  Kelby Brooks played a Kyle Rayner/Nighthawk Prime team with Orange Power Battery, while Pierre McDermott played a cleverly crafted team fit for the metagame.  Con LE Loki and Stealth Suit Iron Man (go ahead and look them up) was his choice of weapons as well as an Orange Power Battery.  With most of the teams unable to draw lines of fire to both characters, Pierre attacked from relative safety, and used Plasticity to get away once they would base his team.  However, Kelby’s Kyle Rayner was too much to handle, as he easily dispatched Loki and ended the game without losing a piece.  Congratulations to Kelby Brooks, the Majestix ROC Super Qualifier Champion!

In the Co-Main Event, we tried our hand at a “Pentathlon” to find out who the best All-Around Player is.  We had 5 different formats (3 Constructed, and 2 Sealed) and took the best composite score to figure out who our 3 Medalists were.  It was wildly successful and we will tweak this in future events.  Congrats to Ryan Roberts, Jose Vergara, and Brian Wasowski for being our Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medalists, respectively.

I just want to thank all of the great players who came and supported the event.  I also want to thank my amazing staff, Kevin, Alex, Jon, and Kenny for making the event run smoothly once again.
