The second Regional brought many players, far and wide. Phoenix Nest, Stratagem, Strike Force 5, T3, Brothers Prob, Bakersfield Brawlers were all in attendance. The field was deep with talent. This was the largest event of the season so far, with 51 total players in the Main Event, with another 15+ players coming to play in the various Side Events. It was 5 Rounds of Swiss with a cut to a Top 16. The metagame was full of the expected: Jakeem, Krang, and Shredder. There was a special prize Spider-Ham prize for the highest finishing non-Jakeem/Krang/Shredder in the tournament, and Kris Flores won with a 4th Place finish with his Sinister Syndicate team. Traveling partners PJ Bolin and Easton Brock met in the Finals after a grueling weekend, essentially playing the same team. PJ was able to continue his hot streak and pull out the victory in a relatively quick game to become the Majestix Regional Champion! There was also a 3v3 Superhero Showdown side event, which saw 9 teams (27 players) vie for the third ever Championship. Two Clicks From KO took home the Gold Medals, which featured PJ Bolin, Easton Brock, and Aaron Cantu. They defeated Strike Force 5 in the Finals, while Team Majestix took home the Bronze Medals. Congratulations to all, and especially PJ, for a successful weekend!
Analysis:
1st Place – PJ Bolin
Only 4 teams in the Top 16 were non-Krang/Jakeem teams. Surprisingly, no Shredders made the Top 16. There were 10 Jakeem teams, 2 Krang teams, 1 Sinister Syndicate, 1 D20 Dr. Strange, 1 Mary Marvel, 1 Deadpool team in the Top 16. The overall field was basically Krang and Jakeem. There were a lot of innovation, but just not good enough to crack the top 16. Sinister Syndicate is proving to be a viable team in the format with another strong finish. Mary Marvel showed that she is still relevant, while Easton and PJ showed that Bat Knight is the real deal right now. Aaron’s Deadpool-centric team did break through, which is a good sign for the set, and we will see if any more innovation will come out from the set in the coming events.
