The inaugural Majestix Open Series event was this past weekend and had a solid showing of 20 players. A few out-of-state players made the trek to try out this relatively unexplored format. The last time the Majestix ROC Age format was played had a great turnout, with Aaron Cantu winning with Mistress Death/Mini Shredder. PJ Bolin battled a tough field piloting almost the same team, as he outlasted Majestix local Emilio Gutierrez and his innovative Mystique team to claim the first spot in the Open Series Invitational. The next stop is in Bakersfield in less than 3 weeks, see everyone then!
Analysis:
1st Place – PJ Bolin
The format has some diversity for sure. With the previous results in, players mostly stuck to the tried and true (Shredders, Mistress Death, Quinjet), but as you can see in the Top 8, there was some unique ideas. The breakdown was 3 Mistress Death/Book of the Skull, 2 Quinjets, 1 Uni-Mind, 1 Mystiques, 1 Thanosi. What’s interesting is how the Mistress Death teams were constructed. As you can see, Mini Shredder, Goblin King, and the shirtless duo of Kirk and Sulu were all options that the Top 8 players used. Adam proved that Uni-Mind is still viable, while the Quinjet teams had some variation, with Jacob taking the Proteus/Blind Al route. The two standout teams were the Mystiques and Thanosi teams. These two gave fits all day as you either team were difficult to attack. It will be interesting to see how this affects the next stop in Bakersfield.
