The first of two Open Series for 2019 started off with a bang. A great turnout of 35 players coming from Arizona, Colorado and Northern California, and all parts between competed for $1,000 in cash on top of 2018-2019 Convention Exclusives. Top players from the region came out and tried their hand at the very open 300pt Bronze Age format. This format isn’t for the faint of heart, and there were many great teams and unique builds with such a wide array of game elements to choose from. Four of the Top 8 came from Arizona (they are a force to be reckoned with), but in the end it was two local guys fighting it out for the Championship. Richard Medina’s Celebrity Lex team outlasted Ryan Nelson’s Skrull-Hawk in a very methodical and great technical display of positioning to take home the win!
Analysis:
This format is truly a team-builder’s paradise. There were so many different takes on archetypes and new archetypes popping up. Quinjet and Uni-Mind were represented, but it looks like they might not be as well positioned in the format as in previous metagames. Players have game plans against them now. The Top 8 was quite diverse, with 5 different Resources being used. Star Sapphire and Blue Power Battery seem to be taking over as the best options, supplanting Indigo and Yellow. With all the new dice-manipulation going around, Blue Power Battery is well-positioned, making your rollouts better and making your opponents miss. Undying is a strong archetype in the format, but as you can see, they can be dealt with if you’re playing the right team. The Top 8 had a good mix of Tentpole teams and Mid-Range teams as well, making it a truly exciting format to try out.
