The first ever Clix Cup Championship attracted 74 players from all over the country to compete in the Modern Age portion of the weekend. This event was just one of the 4 events to help determine who the best All-Around Heroclix player is over the weekend. This was an ambitious event and it went off without a hitch. There easily over 100 unique players over in attendance, and all kinds of formats to satisfy everyone’s style of play. Many of the top players in the game made the trip to Orlando, Florida and tried their hand at the new post-rotation metagame. Of course, Phoenix Nest was well-represented (aren’t they always?), as well as Clixed Off and 4 Points Gaming. In the end, it was Matty G with his Scientists team versus Tylor and his Animals team. Both had high-Themed Team count, utilizing many low-point figures, but Maggott was just too good, especially in multiples, and they were able to take over the game. Congrats to Tylor for the big win with Animals at the Clix Cup!
Analysis:
The metagame was diverse, but also predictable. With many new archetypes to try out, a few rose to the top: Wonder Woman/Giganta-based teams, Latverian/good stuff teams, Secret Six, Animals, Scientists, Robots, and Air Drop/Alpha Strike teams. Many teams were utilizing plenty of low-cost, efficient figures that were hard to kill. Many bystanders and extra pieces were being added on the map, so games were sometimes drawn out, having to deal with many different characters. Maggott and Flash (super rare) were everywhere, Wendigo and Dark Phoenix shine in formats like this because there are plenty of targets for them to heal from and careful planning means that Wendigo can keep his STOP click active if you can spread out the Wounded tokens to many different targets. It will be interesting to see how the metagame adapts to the very “spread out” nature of these teams.
