You'll Never Guess This Planar Magnetic Headphone's Benefits Top Planar Magnetic Headphones Planar magnetic headphones provide the most detailed and expansive listening experience. Audiophiles who wish to improve their listening experience are raving about them. The best planar magnetic headphone is dependent on your preferences. It all boils down to image structure, clarity, and distinction versus bass punch and slam. 1. Audeze LCD-2 Classic The original LCD-2 was the first pair of planar magnetic headphones that really took off. It is so popular, it has become synonymous with technology. It's still among the top headphones in its class. Its sound quality is amazing particularly for a headset that is priced at more than $1,000. The bass is deep enough to extend past the human hearing range, and is bursting with a lot of detail. The upper mids are warm but not too loud. Overall, there is a lot of detail in the sound, and very little distortion. The earpads are also very comfortable. The headband and earpads are an incredibly soft and flexible feel. They're lightweight enough to wear for long listening sessions without getting too fatigued. They don't completely seal the ear canals like other open-back headphones, which means you can hear what's going on around you. This isn't a problem for quiet areas, but it could be a problem in louder ones. The LCD-2 Classics have a very solid construction and are made to last. The earcups are made from crystal-infused nylon, which is a great material for headphones. It's robust and long-lasting, and is significantly lighter than the wooden rings used on some other Audeze models. The LCD-2 Classics do not feel like the same premium headphones. The LCD-2 Classics have a DIY-like feel, with visible screws and lack of finish. They're still a great pair of headphones, however they may not be suitable for everyone. If you're looking for a similar headphone that is cheaper and less expensive, the Monoprice Monolith M1060 is an excellent choice. These headphones have the same planar technology as the LCD-2 Classics but at a lower cost. The earcups are sealed better and come with a carrying case. The only thing that's missing is the impressive bass extension and clarity that the LCD-2 Classics have, but they still have an amazing sound that should please the majority of audiophiles. 2. Meze LIRIC Meze Audio's affordable and innovative planar magnetic headphones have made it a household name. The latest headphone from the company, the LIRIC 2nd Generation, builds on the first-generation model's success with performance enhancements and a new striped ebony finish for improved modularity and a long, sustainable life. The LIRIC comes with an entire frequency response that ranges from 4Hz to 92,000 Hz. This provides music with outstanding clarity and a wide soundstage. The QWRM (Quarter Wavelength Ressonator Mask) of the headphone efficiently reduces the high-frequency peaks, which can be exhausting for the ear. For high-fidelity listening on the go, the headphones have a closed-back design to block out ambient noise. The headphones feature an ovoid shape that resembles the the human ears for direct connection to the sound source. The Meze LIRIC comes with the company's exclusive Isodynamic Hybrid array driver, which features dual-shaped voice coils for improved audio quality and spatial sound. This dual voicing is the result of over 30 years of development and research which makes it the most lightweight and advanced planar magnet driver on the market. To enhance their sound quality, LIRIC headphones feature a pressure equalization system that precisely regulates airflow and the pressure of the earcup chamber. This ensures that the user hears the same sound quality regardless of whether the headphones are worn at work on a plane, in a hotel or commuting to work. The Meze LIRIC has an incredibly smooth and balanced sound that I found enjoyable to listen to over long periods. The bass is booming and deep, with a clear treble. The soundstage is wide and there is good separation between the instruments and vocals. I loved that there was no detail that was too small for the headphones to miss, from the roar of PJ Harvey's 50ft Queenie to the individual guitar strings. If you're looking for the top closed-back magnetic headphones for $2000 The Meze LIRIC is a great option. It's a great alternative to the Dan Clark Audio E3 but offers a slightly different timbre and is a bit lighter overall. 3. Meze Elite In their quest to make headphones that are visually stunning and sounding great, Romanian manufacturer Meze Audio have increased their game in recent years by introducing several flagship products. The Elite new model, which is their most recent model, is their highest premium headphone yet and is a worthy replacement for Empyrean as Meze's flagship. Similar to the Empyrean, the Elite is an open-back model with unique suspension wings design that enhance their wearability. These wings are similar to the ones found on Dan Clark, HiFIMan or Sendy headphones, in that they distribute the weight of the Elite's larger than average driver over a larger surface area of your head, enhancing comfort while listening for long durations. They do work well, and I have worn the Elite for long periods of time without any discomfort. Sonically, the Elite is a reference-style headphone that has an upgraded hybrid isodynamic array driver that has the ability to provide extremely low harmonic distortion of less than 0.1% across its entire frequency range. It also has an extremely high sensitivity rating of 101 dB/mW as well as an impedance of 32 Ohms which means it can be controlled very easily by even budget headphone amplifiers or DAPs (assuming they can accept the standard headphone jack). The Elite's diaphragm has been a significant upgrade from the Empyrean that has shifted away from the polymer that was developed by a custom-made company to utilize a low-mass semi-crystalline film that was engineered through sequential biaxial lengthening. This creates an Elite diaphragm which is strong and thin, while offering excellent resistance to fatigue and stress cracking. The Elite's diaphragm with a lower mass results in higher resolution and speed. It is now capable of competing with other models like the Audeze LCD-2 Classic at a lower cost. In actual fact, the Elite is perhaps even more resolving than the LCD-2 and it has the ability to sound extremely neutral while delivering the impression of transparency, depth top-end air, and transients that makes it an excellent option for those who love rock music as well as other genres in which bass is very prominent. 4. Meze HE400SE The HE400SE is among the most popular headphones made of planar magnetic material around. It's a great option for any audiophile looking to transition into open-back headphones. It's is also a great entry-level model for those who are already comfortable with planar magnetic technology. It comes with HiFiMAN's latest Stealth Magnet Design, which minimizes distortion and wave diffraction to nearly unnoticeable levels. While the HE400SE does not have quite the bass extension that some other HiFiMAN models do, it still delivers excellent low-end performance for an open-back headphone. The HE400SE is very full and deep low end, but it doesn't sound like a boomer. The overall tone is neutral, with a hint of forward-looking midrange and an elevated treble which many listeners will find pleasing. Vocals are crystal clear on the HE400SE. The HE400SE is a fantastic choice for listening to acoustic music, but also classical and orchestral music. This is the best budget headphone for listening to this type of music. If you're used closed-back headphones that have a bass-heavy tuning, the transition may be uncomfortable. It takes a few listening sessions to get used to it. The HE400SE also has an impressive image. The HE400SE produces a wide soundstage with a detailed soundstage that allows the musicians to feel comfortable in space. On my explanation Let's Go Crazy by Prince, the vocals and drums feel up front and in your face. The guitar solo is also very prominent and can easily be heard over the other instruments. The HE400SE is a good extension of the treble, with excellent clarity. The treble is a bit warmth however it isn't harsh. It doesn't have that added brightness that other headphones with brighter trebles possess, but it does have the sibilance or a fatty quality of some other open-back headphones. The HE400SE has an impedance of 25 O which means it will require a fairly powerful amplifier to reach its maximum SPL. It is compatible with most smartphones and portable music players, but it requires an amplifier that has a minimum of 0.5 W output to achieve its maximum SPL.
