Aaron Cantu wins the largest Majestix $1K Open Series ever!

Main Event Top 16

We had the most successful and most fun $1K Open Series ever! Combine this with the ROC Regional and it was one of the most memorable weekends in a long time. As expected, we had travelers from all over the Western Region, including Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Texas, Vancouver, Ohio, and all over California. It truly was a destination weekend as many players brought family and took in the sights of SoCal as well as the tournament itself. With a whopping 80 players entering the Main Event, this was the largest ROC event since Clixathon, and by far the largest of the new season. We can’t thank the players and venues enough, who have helped hype up the event.

It was a grueling six rounds of Swiss and afterwards we had a clear cut to the Top 16. The road to the Top 16 itself was a tough one so all the players should pat themselves on the back for making it through such a large and competitive field. The Top 16 was filled with Super Skrulls (6) and Kyle Rayners (4), with a smattering of other archeypes (Proxima Midnight, Highfather, Thane, Dr. Strange). In the end, it was Aaron Cantu’s Super Skrull/Brother Voodoo team that outlasted Rob Barazzuol’s Proxima Midnight/Brother Voodoo/Jason of Sparta team to take down the Majestix $1K ROC Regional. It seems that Brother Voodoo is still very much in the metagame.

Co-Main Event Champion Roel Sanchez

Co-Main Event Champion Roel Sanchez

In the Co-Main Event, the $1K “ROC of Ages,” we had a solid 44 players enter this new and untested format. Even with the addition of playing Indy pieces, and older pieces (recently retired sets), the field was dominated by Modern Age pieces. Alex Pereda proved that there is still use for older pieces as he used Airstrike Ross to great efficiency, finishing in 2nd place. He lost to Roel Sanchez, who’s great strategy of using double-barrier with the Green Battery, along with his Highfather and John Stewart, was just too much for his opposition. The control aspect of his team hindered his opponent’s plans and used timely attacks to pull out wins.

Congratulations to the two winners and we look forward to the next Open Series $1K event. Be on the lookout, because one might come near you.
