To start off, this team far exceeded my expectations. I knew it was a good team when I built it, but the options with this team are greater than what I anticipated, and I piloted it all the way to 3rd, only losing to the winner all day (6-1). So let’s dive into the matchups.ROC 2016

Round 1 – PJ Bolin

Nick Fury 120
Spectre 130
Avenger’s Sky-Cycle 50
(Map: Atillan North Pacific Ocean)

PJ won map roll and we went to the map of his choice. I took the side with less water surrounding my starting area. First turn PJ moved up a bit while piloting the cycle with Spectre, and I went ahead and TK’d the Weapon Drop to Engineer. I Sidestepped behind some elevated and cleared. Next turn involved some Sidestepping and clearing. On his third turn he moved the Sky Cycle pretty far up the map, and carried Nick with it. So I went ahead and switched to HSS Supes and took a shot at the Cycle, hitting it for 4 with a Perplex from Ant-Man. Afterwards I moved up Ant-Man, morphing into the hockey puck and placing an Ant Swarm adjacent to both Nick and the Cycle and Outwitted Nick’s damage ability. From there he Sidestepped away carrying Nick, moving onto a building within my Sidestep range. He took a shot on Engineer with the Cycle and missed. On my turn I Sidestepped with Engineer, carrying Ant-Man so I could Outwit Nick’s toughness and Poison both him and the Cycle. Then Engineer picked Battle Fury, Flurry, and Blades/Claws/Fangs. I killed Nick in two attacks and ended my turn. He cleared his cycle. I Poisoned with an Ant-Swarm to remove Spectre from the cycle. Afterwards Bizarro and Superman finished off Spectre. 1-0; 300 points.

Round 2  – Justin Piercy

Doctor Spectrum Prime 110
Klarion the Witchboy x2 140
Mercury 25
Apprentice 25

(Map: Danny The Street)

I believe this was the only time that I won map roll, so we went to one of my favorite maps, Danny the Street. The game started with me equipping Weapon Drop and shifting to the defensive Supes, then Sidestepping up. He then moved both Klarions out about a quarter of the way down the map. I moved up onto a ledge and passed turn. He decided to go ahead and shoot Spectrum across the map and go for a lot of damage, although he had to target Superman so he needed an 8 to hit with one Probability Control in line of fire for the each of us. He hit his first roll and missed the next two. So the next turn I Sidestepped and Poisoned both Klarions with an Ant Swarm that I had moved up he turn before. Afterwards I shifted Superman to Hypersonic and Perplexed damage to hit Spectrum for 4. Engineer then chose Hypersonic, Super Strength, and Prob. She finished Spectrum off with a heavy object. I moved Wasp up to create another Ant Swarm and Outwitted Klarion’s Speed power. He tried to free up a Klarion by attacking the Ant Swarm, but missed. This triggered my swarm’s ability to deal penetrating damage do adjacent characters that didn’t attack. This dealt one to Klarion and killed a Teekl. From there I was able to mop up both Klarions and take out the rest of the force with relative ease. 2-0; 600 Points

Round 3 – Daniel Powell

Nick Fury 120
Captain Marvel Prime 82
Copycat 90
Weapon Drop 8
(Map: Verkhoyansk)

This game was tricky, but Daniel started with swapping with my Engineer. It’s important to note that I rolled a 4 for my Weapon Drop, so I started with Regeneration and Defend showing. Knowing this I tk’d it back to supes, picked it up and rolled for Regeneration with Copycat, triggering the swap. I then chose Outwit, countered Nick’s Improved Targeting and Sidestepped to Elevated Terrain between us. He rolled his Weapon Drop onto an Enhancement click and chose to use that. He then did a Running Shot with Captain Marvel carrying Nick for a kill shot onto Engineer. After my Spectre’s prob, he missed twice and I was safe. He broke away with Copycat and moved down the map. Next turn Engineer kept moving with Hypersonic and hit Captain Marvel on her way out. I moved the rest of my team up and created another Ant Swarm. I also chose Outwit again to get rid of Nick’s IT. On his turn he moved up and placed directly next to Engineer. The next few turns involved a lot of missing attacks, but I finally killed Nick off after Engineer took Flurry and Battle Fury. Then Captain Marvel and Copycat were all that was left. Marvel missed a few attacks and went down to Bizarro. Copycat was dealt with by a Running Shot/Pulse Wave from Engineer. 3-0; 900 points

Round 4 – Alan Hawkins

Nick Fury 120
Kyle Rayner 180
(Map: Atillan North Pacific Ocean)

The first few turns of this match were purely positioning. I had to set up a Telekinesis yo-yo to stay safe from his massive range. Eventually I was able to TK up Supes, but missed my Hypersonic attack. To make up for it, I sent up Ant-Man and Outwitted Watcher’s Eyes on Nick, tying Kyle and Nick up with an Ant Swarm, with no way to cut the Super Senses. Nick attempted to kill it, but ended up missing and giving Kyle feedback damage. So my next turn I put out another Ant, but chose not to Poison as it would just put Kyle on his god click. I moved up the rest of my force and Outwitted Watchers Eyes once again. This time he attacked with Kyle and killed off an Ant Swarm. He missed the other one with Nick and ended turn. On my next turn I attempted to KO Nick, but his Shape Change rolls weren’t having it, so I had to stall out another turn. The next turn he finally broke away with Kyle for a Running Shot on Engineer. I took 3-Damage and was on my last click. Nick clears. My next turn, Bizarro rolls onto this: 12-Attack, Charge/Exploit Weakness. I see this and know that it’s my best chance of hitting Kyle off the god click. So I quickly Sidestep the remaining Ant Swarm and Poison him, putting him onto the god click. Bizarro Charged on Kyle and hit for 3-Penetrating Damage. Superman followed up with a Running Shot Psychic Blast for the kill. Afterwards, my team was able to swarm Nick and bring him down after a turn or two.

Top 16 – Mathew Shifflett

Mary Marvel 150
Freddy Freeman  112
Spectre 35
(Map: Savage Land)

The one thing to keep in mind about this game is I could position myself where he could only over-extend himself to attack Bizarro. I chose Plasticity with Engineer every turn so he could not move anywhere adjacent to her, and I put my back to a wall so he would have to if he came towards my heavy hitters. He ended up going for the attack on Bizarro with Freddy and Bizarro rolled Shape Change. My turn consisted of: Outwitting Freddy’s Impervious, and killing him with Superman and Bizarro. The next turn Mary came in to attack Bizarro again, although she hit and killed him. Afterwards the same fate became of her, but she did manage to take Engineer with her. From there an Ant Swarm poisoned Spectre to death.

Top 8 – Alex Blythe

Jenny Sparks 125
Engineer 90
Hank Pym 50
Ultron-6 (Drone) 30
Pym Particles 2

The first few turns were mostly Sidestepping and getting the better position for Telekinesis yo-yo’s. He moved up just a bit too far in an attempt to bait me out, but underestimated my attack range. I choose Hypersonic, Precision Strike, and Probability Control with Engineer and took out Hank Pym. I then Tk’d her back to safety and Sidestepped to a safer position. He retaliated by Tk’ing Jenny up to Pulse Wave my Hank Pym to death. The game was tied but Jenny was over extended, and Engineer and Supes made quick work of her, Ant-man then Poisoning the Drone to death as well. His Engineer cleared and I shifted to the Running Shot Supes and finished her off.

Top 4 (Very Detailed Report) – Michael Smith

Superman x2 180
Batman 85
Atomica 25
Justice League x4 4
Pym Particles 2
(Map: Black Mercy Garden)

The first turn started as normal, just both of us getting our equipment and Sidestepping around. Second turn he chose TK with Batman and killed off my Spectre with a Superman, taking a Mystics click in return, and also giving Batman two action tokens. So I saw an opportunity to one-shot Batman, needing a 7 once with no PC on the attack. The two tokens on Batman triggered Superman’s Special Power to deal an extra damage so I could double Perplex my attack to a 12-AV. The only problem in doing this was it left me insanely over-extended. With all this in mind I went for it and missed, sadly. I had exhausted my actions so he moved around and only chose to return fire with one Superman, leaving me on click 5 for a turn.

Surprised that he didn’t kill him off, I quickly retreated back and chose Support with Engineer to heal him. I rolled a 4 so it put me to click 3. Meanwhile, I used Ant-Man to keep Michael at bay for a turn or two using Ant Swarms and high defenses. He was content with his lead so he killed an Ant Swarm and took a shot on Ant-Man but missed. Next turn I was able to heal Superman to top click. The game was about halfway over and I know I had to make a move quick, but I had to clear next turn. Luckily Michael just moved into a more defensive position across the map and gave me the chance. My next turn I removed what remained of my force over to his side of the map and chose Plasticity and PC with Engineer to prevent his Supermen from getting near me. He ended up coming out from behind his blocking terrain and killing Ant-Man, although he left Batman out for my Bizarro to take a shot on as long he got to a good click.

On my next turn, I Sidestepped and Poisoned with my one remaining Ant Swarm, getting one click on Batman and one on Superman. Bizarro luckily rolled onto a click with RCE and Sidestep, so he killed off Batman and tied the game on points. Next the switched to Hypersonic Superman with his clear Superman and killed off Bizarro. The other cleared. My next turn I Poisoned Atomica to death and Engineer and Superman killed His tokened Superman. His following turn he shifted to the Charge Superman and broke down a wall, rolling a 6 for his trait and creating a heavy object. He charged onto Engineer and hit a 7 twice, killing her off. The game was tied at 202pts as I still had my Pym Particles on the field. I had a Top Click Superman on defense dial and an Ant Swarm. He had his on the Charge dial on click 2.

The following events happened turn by turn: I swapped to my Charge Dial and missed a 7 onto his Supes. He hit mine needing a 7. My Supes goes to click 3. I change to defense dial and clear. He stays on Charge dial. I stayed in defense dial and crit missed. He followed up with a hit and we both cleared again. I decided to try to run and make him chase me a bit, switching to Hypersonic dial, which would have worked, but I failed my Hypersonic breakaway roll, rolling a 1. He finished me off the following turn and that was game!

Overall I think I couldn’t have played any better this tourney. It was a very interesting field with a lot of skilled players. I couldn’t be more proud to lose to my teammate, Michael Smith, who ended up winning the tournament. Hope you enjoyed the write up everyone!
