Tournament Report – $1K Trial (Bronze Age) – Joe Pangrazio

by Joe Pangrazio

I guess it’s my turn to do one of these. On September 9th at WNY Gaming in Hamburg, NY, I had the opportunity to play in my very first Majestix event.

Monster Mash

Once the WIN made the F4 #100 Mole Man legal, this was the only team that made sense. Especially since, if I’m going to play Bronze Age, I have to have a TMNT figure on the team.

Main Force

F4 #100 – Mole Man
TMNT3 #033 – Mini-Shredder
XDP #G018 – Wendigo x 2
TMT – G001 Surtur
GG – 026 Mole Man
Black Lantern Power Battery
Star Sapphire Ring
Catapult
Stop Sign
Wall
Bulldozer

ID Cards

Sandman (with F4 Sandman)
Captain America (with Captain America, Resilient)
Green Lantern (with JLU GL and Starro Minion GL)

Sideline

Luthor
Firestorm
Gorilla Grodd
Black Vulcan
The Flash

Maps are also crucial to this team. I had Aunt Petunia’s House in case anyone played a Batman Prime team and my preferred map, Poison Ivy’s Greenhouse. Considering I won map every round, it’s a good thing map mattered.

The basic strategy of the team is simple. Turn 1, put the wall on Mini-Shredder (to give him that sweet, sweet Mystics and Shape Change). Turn 2, give Surtur the Catapult. TK Mini-Shredder out. Mini-Shredder calls in a Green Lantern, who then carries and attacks the opposing force (with Ivy’s Green House and some FREE movement in turn 1, I can hit my opponent in their starting area). Make my opponent’s focus on Mini-Shredder, and retaliate with Surtur/get in with Wendigo. Easy peezy.

Round 1 – Immortal Hulk/SR Captain Marvel/Black Widow

I figured I’d see one of these, because they can be annoying to deal with. Hulk equipped the Symbiote and the whole squad moved up. Mini-Shredder went out with JLU Green Lantern (who began his tradition on this day of missing the opening attack). The battle was joined fairly quickly, and some important misses/successful Shape Changes on his part drew the match out. However, the Wendigos got into the fight quickly and Widow/Captain Marvel were chewed down quickly. A Flurry from Immortal Hulk was not a great choice, but he was only spun through twice before time was called. I came out with the win, but the first round is just for practice.

Round 2 – SR Captain Marvel (assigned the Supreme Intelligence), CMM #006 Yon Rogg, CMM #005 Att Lass, CMM #014 Att Lass

I thought this was a little more interesting twist. The possibility of spitting out a Supreme Intelligence is incredibly tempting. I was surprised when he moved his whole squad up on turn 1. Mini-Shredder was TK’d out and JLU Green Lantern was called in again. And again, Green Lantern wiff’d. But this is where things get interesting. That miss was only one of four attack rolls I made this game. I Sidestepped in with Mini-Shredder and pinged Capt. Marvel. On his turn, his team attacked and hit Mini-Shredder a few times. Chewie even came out but missed or confused Mini-Shredder for a fellow cat (Shape Change). On my turn, Surtur retaliated and deal the two penetrating that knocked Capt. Marvel past her first STOP click. I then did some movement shenanigans with Surtur so Mini-Shredder could ping some more. I forget how, but it came down to Mini-Shredder calling in Sandman who charged and quaked (third attack, second to hit) and then Surtur retaliated (fourth attack, third to hit) finishing off his team. The rest was 2-penetrating from Surtur or pings from Mini-Shredder. It was quick and kind of crazy.

Round 3 – Brotherhood: DR Magneto, DR Sabretooth, XDP Blob, XDP G015 Magneto, Red Power Battery

This one gave me the most trouble all day. I switched to Starro’s GL to hopefully get an Energy Explosion blast off. He missed that (for the record, up this point, my first call in missed their attack every round). He responded by blasting my poor sweet GL into oblivion with Magneto. On my turn, Surtur jumped over to his starting area and got a nice hit on his entire force. KO’ing 2×2 Magneto and getting 2-damage into the DR (as Surtur’s after resolutions damage is not an attack, they take the full 2). I then attempted to send a Wendigo into the fray with a Mind Control from GG Mole Man, only for that sweet 12-Attack to miserably miss a 17-Defense. Resigned to my fate, I moved Surtur as far away as I could and waited. He made a tactical error here and called in XDP Jubilee. He positioned her for a single target Pulse Wave on Surtur (before I saw her damage was 1, I assumed he was going to go for a Pulse Wave on Surtur and Mini-Shredder). He missed the attack and went to theme team, at which point I told him not to. He asked why and I reminded him that Surtur is on his STOP click. Short of a crit, he could not deal damage to Surtur. And why waste a theme team Prob on the shot of a crit? My next turn, I believe I called in Captain America Resilient, and was able to carry Mini-Shredder to a better position, and chew down the DR figures. At that point, we Mind Controlled the Wendigo again, and this time it hit! He got in the fray and finished off Jubilee before going after the DR. In the end, the Wendigo went down, Surtur retaliated and crit missed but took out the DR characters with his after resolutions and Blob went down to pings.

3-0 going into top cut. We did a top 4 just for laughs.

Top 4 – EX Iron Man, DXF Mistress Death, Mjolnir, Star Sapphire Battery

This one was against my buddy Jeff Colossus and I felt a little bad. Same first turn as normal, with him equipping Mjolnir to Mistress Death. Turn 2, TK out Mini-Shredder and call in JLU Green Lantern. Running Shot up and get through his Shape Change to target and hit both Iron Man and Mistress Death with psychic blast. I hit Iron Man to his STOP click and deal 1-damage to Mistress Death, then take my Mystics damage. In the back field, the Power Battery landed on Perplex so I went +1 to Surtur’s Attack and retaliated on Iron Man. It caught Jeff off guard until I reminded him that I took Mystics. He failed his Shape Change and I hit Iron Man for another three straight, then KO’d him with the after resolutions two. The next turn, I was able to get the Wendigo up and KO’d Mistress Death once, at which point he conceded. I hate to do that to a friend but a) I didn’t expect to make it through all the Shape Change, b) if Mistress Death started dealing damage, it was going to be ugly and c) this is what the team was built to do.

Finals – Revenge of the Brotherhood

Same team I played in the third round. He surprised me by being a bit more aggressive with his Sabretooth, since it just allowed me to get hits in on his faster with a Wendigo. Match went faster this time since I wasn’t missing as much and we were on top of each other sooner. Plus, my Surtur didn’t crit miss this time.

All in all, a good day of Clix and it was fun busting out my Mini-Shredder. Especially since I believe I’ve only played him one other time. What I like most about the experience is that the field is definitely wide open. Newer figures are more efficient, and obviously going to get the nod sooner than older figures. But there is enough wriggle room that different synergies can elevated figures. I definitely look forward to getting some more Majestix events on the East Coast. Maybe if I hit the lotto I can even come over and play with you guys.

In conclusion: have you heard of clixnexus.com?
