Tournament Report – Kokomo Mega SQ (Indiana) – Daniel Powell

 by Daniel Powell

Greetings Again Everyone! Another article quickly after my first last week. This time we will be discussing my win this weekend at PJ Bolin’s 400 ROC Age Limited event. PJ ran an excellent event and handled the tough rule interactions ROC Age brought to the table all day.  The event was hosted at a banquet hall serving reasonably priced food and drinks all day that was icing on the day. 44 Players made for 5 rounds of Swiss and Top 16 cut. My team list was discussed in detail in last week’s article. I won’t re-hash every finer detail of the team just as they were relevant to the match.

The Team:

275 Uni-Mind with 5 Eternals.
-TMT057 Sersi
-TMT046 Makkari
-GOTG047B- Thanosi
-GOTG058 Mentor
-GG049 Thanos.
90 DP038 Copycat
10 TMTs010 Thunderstrike Object.

Let’s jump into how each round went. I want to highlight Map choice and choice of the Copycatted figure as all were relevant keys to victory.

Round 1 versus George Massu.

+5 Mystical Theme:
Jakeem Thunder
LE Question
Shredder Clone
2x SR GL
Gamma Bomb
Thunderstrike

Map – I won – ROC Underground
Copycat Figure – LE Question.

A tough Match-Up and player for a first-round draw. George’s accomplishments are well-known and he is piloting a well-built team. Luck favored me in going to the Underground map as it would allow my team to equip my Thunderstrike while the Gamma Bomb clicked. George reverted Copycat picking Regen off Jakeem one round before the Gamma Bomb went off allowing my Uni-Mind to retaliate against his Question after an Outwit on Question’s anti-Perplex damage power. This put George in a down position on points (100-90). The Gamma Bomb then created massive amounts of hindering on the Underground map. This allowed me to keep my range advantage to Jakeem by picking Sersi’s Stealth. A well-placed shot one-hit KO’d Shredder Clone knocking him back while healing Uni to top dial. Jakeem retaliated with knocking Uni-Mind to his STOP click. A successful Regen put him back into battle. Continued back and forth with some unlucky dice on George’s part lead to a KO of his team moments before time was called. 400-90 Win

Round Two Versus Austin Lytle

+2 Sentinel Theme:
Juston Seyfert
Nimrod + ReProgramming ATA
Bat Signal

Map- I won – Crossfire Canyon
Copycat Figure – None

In this match, I chose to not take his Juston Seyfert and used Copycat as a support figure for my team. Turn 1 I equipped Thunderstrike by picking TK with Uni-Mind and having Copycat pick that power to bring the object back to Uni-Mind. A Sidestep forward sets up my next turn. Austin moves up to the Bat Signal carrying Juston and passes. I Choose Running Shot, Use my triple Perplex plus a movement Perplex from Copycat taking Perplex to one shot Juston. Austin responds with several massive shots of multi-attack against Copycat but rolls back to back 3s. This miss turns the tide in my favor as Uni-Mind and Copycat pour the attacks into Nimrod bringing him down. Of note – The new Multi-Attack rulings of taking any two actions and no DDM means he can’t be discounted. 396- 0 win

Round 3 versus Lucas Tom Van Holland

+5 Monster Theme:
Zombie Super Skrull
Goblin King at 75 with Diplomatic Immunity
Doctor Frankenstein
Bizarro Green Arrow
GG Mole-Man
Cowgirl Pog
Bat-signal
Mjolnir
Asgardian Shield

Map – Lucas won – Wakanda
Copycat Figure – Goblin King

Lucas Passes his first turn allowing Uni to equip Thunderstrike. Copycat is reverted and KO’d. Lucas does not take Copycat for his own via ZSS trait. A Missed Mind Control on Doctor Frankenstein prevents him from being able to move next to the Bat Signal for a recall of Goblin King. GK then barriers himself in. I have to clear. Goblin King Pushes to knock Uni-Mind to his first STOP click next turn. I respond by KO’ing Goblin King with Steal Energy, Lucas neglects to use Diplomatic Immunity ATA to save Goblin King. This still has me down in points. A mis-position of his Mole-Man allows ranged strike to KO Mole-Man right-siding the point gap. This also leaves me double token’d.  Over the next two turns with a Flurry and subsequent exploit from ZSS and Uni-Mind is too his last STOP-click. In subsequent turns, several Shape Change Rolls saved ZSS and put BGA on this first STOP click allowing Uni to Steal Energy back, KO the Cowgirl Pog, KO Doctor Frankenstein. ZSS is hanging close to BGA for Ranged protection. I choose to Multi-Target Pulse Wave to knock back ZSS one square (BGA on STOP with Toughness) continuing Uni-Mind’s healing. Preemptive Outwitting of ZSS’s Outwit meant I was free to Drop Power cosmic for Perplexes. BGA’s remaining STOP-clicks were overcome and ZSS was unable to overcome my high defense values. ZSS was Pulse-Waved as a formality as time was almost over.

Of note- Doctor Frankenstein’s was a great figure choice by Lucas. 400-90 win

Round 4 Versus Jaylen Major

160 Uni-Mind (Thena and Makkari)
2x Doc Ock LE
Overdrive
25pt Domino
Karen Page

Map – I won Crossfire Canyon
Copycat Figure – Overdrive.

Jaylen has recently piloted this team to a Super Qualifier win just two weeks prior knocking me out of the Top 8. I knew he was well versed in piloting this team. Taking Overdrive meant Uni-Mind could only take one Doc Ock with him. During early turns, picking Stealth, maneuvering with the Charged-Up pog allowed me to take shots at the support pieces and apply several -6 Perplexes to Uni-Minds movement to keep the Doc Ocks at bay. A successful Shape Change roll by my Uni-Mind kept a barrage of Flurries at bay as Jaylen continued to keep the pressure on my team. Eventually only Jaylen’s Uni-Mind was left with my Uni-Mind at full health. A Pop of his Eternals arrived shortly after.

Jaylen played this match extremely well and expect more from this young man in the future. 400+ point – 0 Win

Round 5 versus Easton Brock

WATX Fantomex
Bill Agent of Aim.
Splinter
Atomica
SF Dr. Strange.
Juston Seyfert
Bat-Knight
Enchanted Crowbar.
Bat Signal

Map- I won Crossfire Canyon
Copycat Figure – Bat Knight.

A start and end to swiss rounds against top-tier players. This match was mostly un-notable. a misplacement of Bill Agent of Aim by Easton allowed an early KO. Picking Stealth and having superior range allowed a slog through of the remainder of the team as Bill was key to busting Stealth for Fantomex. Full Point win – O

#1 Seed going into single-elminiation

Top 16 Match Versus George Massu

Map George won – Grid Reality Courtyard.
Copycat Figure- LE Question

After some delicious food at the venue we kicked off Top 16. I was particularly nervous having to face George again, knowing he would’ve learned from our first match. This Match ultimately came down to roll off as George couldn’t engage without risk and setup his barrier factory. George did not revert Copycat. I could not break through his Barrier either. We were gracious throughout this process. Oddly enough George could’ve reverted Copycat and took advantage of Last Round had he deferred map this time. 9-5 roll off win.

Top 8 Match versus Michael Kirk

+5 Sinister Syndicate:
Speed Demon
X2 LE Doc Ock
SR Doc Ock
FF Kingpin
Overdrive

Map – Michael Won – Wizkids Office.
Copycat figure- Overdrive

Michael was a skillful player but unfortunately Overdrive was a lynch pin on his team. The mobility my team gained from Overdrive kept Michael to just one attack from Speed Demon while pieces fell one by one. Full Point- 0 win.

Top 4 Match Versus Easton Brock.

Map- I won Crossfire Canyon
Copycat Figure – Bat Knight.

Playing George twice in a day was stressful enough now a rematch with Easton was in order. Easton did a much better job protecting Bill from an initial salvo. SF Strange instead was KO’d to this initial attack. Bill and Fantomex combined forces to knock Uni-Mind to his STOP click. Uni-Mind Regens to full dial while Bill and Fantomex are cleared and protected. I had just enough reach to TK Bat-Knight up and KO Bill in the back of characters. A Successful KC Roll by Bat-Knght and missed attack on Bat-Knight from Easton kept him off of Regen and Reversion. A successful hit from Uni-Mind on Fantomex and follow-up by Bat-Knight caused Easton to concede afterwards. Full Point win

Finals Match Versus Lucas Tom Van Holland.

Third Rematch of the day! We discussed this match-up prior, if Lucas won map he was going to alternate Barrier on the Underground and I know if he won map I wasn’t going to take a figure with Copycat. Lucas and I rolled off to prevent a 45-minute dance. 5-4 roll off win and victory.

Final Thoughts

Copycat lived up to her team disruption and support capabilities. Zombie Super Skrull and Doctor Frankenstein are a terrifying combination and ZSS is just as potent as he ever was. I saw a ton of diverse teams being played, Alyosha Kraven, Triple Takion builds, Shredders with Banshee, Ultimate Clayface with Enchantress, ThrillKiller Robins to name a few. Major Props to those guys. The Errata to Uni-Mind still makes him very viable. Not being able to pick powers on the opponents turn makes for very cautious play. Barrier is in contention for most powerful standard power next to Outwit in the current Meta. Being locked out of a game is not pleasant.

Thanks again to PJ for running a magnificent event!
