Tournament Report – Tank Open (Tulsa, Oklahoma) – Kaleb Redick

by Kaleb Redick

Hello everyone! Kaleb Redick here and I am going to talk about the recent Tulsa, Oklahoma Tank Open that took place on May 15, 2021.  This was the first in-person competitive event I have been to in over a year and I was pretty excited going into it.  There were 32 total people playing.  The question was: what team to use?  Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary was just released and would be legal.  It was pre-rotation 300 Modern Age.  New rules would be in play.  The options were pretty wide open.  My first choices were between a mind-control based Starro team and a Latveria theme with God Doom.  After playtesting them both, they just didn’t hold up to the new meta.  So, I landed on a Secret Six theme team.  It gave me a lot of answers so certain team builds, full map reach with a super effective offensive piece, and lots of TK/Outwit/TTPC/Perplex shenanigans from across the map with both the Scarabs.  All the pieces are squishy, but they pack a punch and are very tough to deal with if you aren’t prepared for it.  All pieces were used at their low dial.  The team comes with everything you need for competitive play: Outwit (with opposing figs not getting PROTECTED or SAFEGAURD: Outwit), Perplex, Prob, TK, Colossal Retal (x3), ability to remove/TK away opponent items, theme team Probs, and what I would consider one of the best bystanders in the game right now: Rookie.  One game element I did not use often was Commissioner’s ability to Power Action and give a friendly adjacent figure a free attack if they share a keyword with him.  This was clutch for either Scarab KO’ing a fig on last click or Rookie getting another 11-Atk / 3-Dmg (barring Perplexes) using Pen/Psy now that it can be used as passive.  Lastly, I wanted to touch on the Necro Sword.  As someone pointed out to me before the tournament (cough…PJ), the sword is indestructible and can’t be removed by the infamous DJ Doom’s trait.  So, if the opponent didn’t have Super Strength on the team, I could plop it down in their face and force them to them deal with my Scarabs.

Swiss Rounds:

Round 1: Justin Robinson – Secret Six theme team reality power and third item was Wonder Woman (lasso maybe?) (Win 1-0 300-50)

The ONLY other Secret Six theme team in the whole 32-person tournament.  We play round one.  He wins map which is huge on a mirror match.  Turn one he equips and keeps first turn immunity.  Turn two I equip and Perplex defense on Sky Tyrant getting ready for his to come full swing.  He sends Tyrant in and kills mine, damages a Giganta I was using to body block, then moves him away with the free move.  I then see my chance: I use Perplexes on Gigantas, attack his Scarab and take Mystic, then free retal/quake, power actions retal with prime, and KO his back line.

Round 2: Brad Broyles- X-Men theme team (Win 2-0 300-115)

He is using the Krakoan Revival trick with Chase A, two Maggots, double Dark Phoenix, Lila to carry the squad, Magneto retal (single base), and Bishop prime.  Secret Six has the unique ability to take away PROTECTED, so my goal is to Outwit chase A’s STOP click and one-turning with Sky Tyrant.  He wins map, goes to Hedge Maze, moves up turn one, and I go with Tyrant to get A, Outwit his Phoenixes retal, then after losing Tyrant and a couple Gigantas was able to clean up.

Round 3: Kevin Nelson- Double Knull Oz (Win 3-0 295 to 0)

I won map and went to HAHA Hacienda.  After a couple turns of equipping and creeping up, he sent a Knull over trying to one shot Sky Tyrant who had a 20-Defense.  He missed.  I got the Knull.  Other Knull came over.  I got him with Tyrant.  He conceded after.  Being able to Outwit through Stealth while adjacent with new rules really hurt Knull.

Round 4: Mike Eskew- Onslaught double DJ Doom Commissioner (Win 300 to 50)

Tough matchup.  He keeps DJ Doom with dice (2/5 and 1/6).  He moves up and I try and attack to force dice to be used.  Can’t remember exactly what happened.  He took Reality Gem.  I equipped sword to Tyrant.  After a lot of back and forth and Mind Controls and Tyrant/Rookie attacks, I was able to take out Commissioner, DJ Doom, and Onslaught.  He conceded with one DJ Doom left.

Round 5: Dustin Seeders- Double Scarab, Harry Leland, Collector, Commissioner, Collector, Mary Jane, and Egg liar ring specs (Win 300-55 although I think it was more points than that)

I win map.  Go to HAHA Hacienda.  Turn one equip power to Tyrant and use Scarab to copy power giving him a 3 damage then destroy specs.  He equips Liar Ring and Mind Controls Giganta who was holding Reality.  He moves her twice with double Mind control and drops Reality away.  I use Scarab to TK Reality, Perplex Sky Tyrant, TK him out, and Charge/Flurry Leland (only a 12-Atk / 3-Dmg because of his trait) and one turn him.  Free move away.  He then Mind Controls Giganta Prime after Perplexing her to a 12-Atk and he goes for my team.  Misses everyone but Commissioner, who dies.  OOF.  Then second Scarab Mind Controls her again and she hits everyone.  Big OOF.  I then equip Reality with Scarab and do power retal and take out his Scarab, Commissioner, and Mary Jane.  Next turn he tries to finish off one of my Scarabs with his and he crit misses to KO itself.  Another big OOF.  I am able to use Tyrant to get his Collector.  Clean up after that.

Top 16: Spencer White- Full Amazo with Galactus and Magneto/Sabertooth/Mister Sinister constructs (Win 300-0)

I win map and go to HAHA Hacienda.  Equip turn one.  He moves up.  I send Tyrant to go for Magneto and then free move back.  He moves up.  I go for Sabretooth with Tyrant and free move back.  After clearing Tyrant I was able to utilize all the Outwits on Amazo so Tyrant can fully damage him.  Concedes shortly after.

Top 8: Mike Eskew- Onslaught Double DJ Doom Commissioner (win 300 to 80ish)

I can’t remember who wins map but his DJ Dooms got 2/4 and 1/5.  Biggest thing in this game was he had to use a 2 to hit with his Rookie.  Came pretty close but was able to use Giganta’s retals to get Commissioner, Rookie, and finally finish off Onslaught.  Concedes after a DJ Doom was KO’d.

Top 4: Eric Mulherin- Double Jason Wyngarde Spider-Pharoah and DJ Doom (Win 300-0)

I lose map and we go to his.  I place objects so I can use my heavies/Necro Sword to Outwit his team anywhere they go.  He switches to Lord Doom and hangs back.  I equip Reality to Perplex Tyrant to 20-Def and only leave 1 line of fire with Rookie to attack him by using Gigantas go body-block.  He decides to move across and go all in on Tyrant to hope to hit and misses both times luckily.  Next turn I double Outwit Jason’s Shape Changes and Tyrant gets both Wyngardes.  Short game after they gone.

Finals: Brad Broyles- X-Men theme Krakoan Revival.

I lose map and he takes me to Hedge Maze.  He moves up and I equip Reality.  I position to where Tyrant is out in front.  He comes in and positions to double Maggot my Tyrant with the bystanders to get Tyrant.  He makes a huge error and brings in a Poison pog but forgets to Poison first which gets Tyrant to second to last click.  He then brings in the second Poison pog and hits, taking me to the last click.  With no Outwits left, he couldn’t finish off Tyrant.  I moved a Giganta prime out so that the pogs from the revival trait would be able to get the Phoenixes.  I was able to get a Maggot and he does not revive him.  I Outwit his retals and position Sky Tyrant by his chase A.  He takes out Rookie and a Giganta.  He tries to surround my remaining double Scarab/Commissioner with his Lila/Prime Bishop/last Maggot.  I used Tyrant to Outwit his chase A’s STOP click, finished him off, then free moved away.  I was able to use Prime Giganta to retal and finish off one Phoenix and Magneto.  Outwitted his last Phoenix retal.  He tries to use Phoenix to finish off Giganta and hits first.  Then he tries to power attack to finish her off and crit misses to KO itself.  Big OOF.  Next turn I am able to finish Bishop.  Time ran out.  I got the win.

Overall, the team is super effective.  I was able to go 9-0 and score max points (2695 because one team only had 295 points).  It does well against a lot of current meta builds.  As with any paper/scissor/rock game, there will certainly be teams that I will have a huge struggle with.  What do you guys think?  Is Secret Six the new team to beat?  Thanks for taking the time to read the article.  Until next time!
