Tournament Report – Worlds (Team Sealed) – Mcconnell Lamarre

by Mcconnell Lamarre

Less than a month before Heroclix Worlds we formed two groups of 3, The Bionic Six! Bionic 1 consisted of Antonio Clark, Garrett Schnathorst and Mcconnell Lamarre. Bionic 2 was made up of Anton Winder, Michael Kornytchuk and Reggie Inojales. For this article we will focus on Bionic 1 and their road to becoming Team World Champions!!

Our pulls were nothing extraordinary. Chase DCeased Wonder Woman, SR Toyman, Penguin, Two-Face and no Primes. The teams we ended up building were:

TEAM A

Zod 90
Zod 90
Toyman 60
Deadshot 60

TEAM B

Penguin 40
050a Two-Face 50
Poison Ivy 80
Mr. Freeze 50
Lincoln March 80

TEAM C

Saturn Queen 100
Lex Luthor 50
DCeased Wonder Woman 75
Nekron 75

Team A’s first matchup was against a full point Nekron, full point Black Hand and chase Hal Jordan at low dial. This was one of the toughest matchups of the day. No one could crack Nekron’s 19-20 defense. Hal got taken down to his last click but couldn’t be put down and just healed all the way back up.

Two other notable matchups were against a Kamu prime team and a King Shark with Kite-man team. Those sharks have such high damage output and survivability. Those were both losses.

Team A ended the day 4-4 but got some timely wins that helped out our team. The most memorable moment was in the finals where both Zods made DCeased Superman Kneel for no less that 5 consecutive turns. It was pure poetry.

Team B played a Gotham City Underworld theme team which had a lot of synergy within it. Not too many powerhouses but Poison Ivy’s vines having the Batman Enemy TA really helped when placing her and Lincoln March. Penguin giving out special Energy Explosion/Knockback to Two-Face was invaluable during so many rounds of Swiss. His two targets allowing him to scatter the field came in handy more than once.

The only Swiss loss was to the former singles Champion Saúl, who we would later play again in the finals. Moving through single elimination had me going up against Black-Adam and Kamo both of which were able to be overcome. Meeting Saúl, again, in the finals, this time choosing a different map and different strategy led to a double 0/0 loss leaning on my teammates a lot to pull out their wins. Which they were able to come through.

The team played better than imagined. I was able to pick map 7/8 games and go 2nd giving me special ice terrain and 2 goons from Penguins trait. Both of which came up throughout the day.

Truly an exciting day that my teammates and I will remember.

Team C had some powerhouse match-ups. Starting in the first round of Swiss. Going against a full Black Adam and two full Thunderers of Qward. The formula for victory was used throughout all the rounds.

Use Nekron to carry Saturn Queen up, and base their biggest attacker. Then use Lex Luthor and Wonder Woman to be bodyguards for Nekron. Use the three outwits Lex gave, which was MASSIVE. Use the Wonder Woman TA with Saturn queen to make her super hard to hit. Mind control, and make their heavy hitters kill their support,  let Nekron heal, and have Wonder Woman and Nekron finish anything that hurting with their penetrating damage. Once Nekron heals, he has Psychic Blast and Exploit Weakness. So, him and Wonder Woman were eating through defenses. Rinse and repeat.

Team C only had one loss, which came  in round three of Swiss.  Nekron outwitted the wrong thing. That error wouldn’t happen again when it faced the same opponent in the championship round. Team C went 7-1 on the day. Extremely proud to have won the way we did. Sealed is my favorite format.
